The problem is just so enormous, time will tell if anything happens. Let's be real: not only did everyone in movies and tv know this sort of thing happens all the time, we all knew. Not specifics, like Weinstein outright raping Rose McGowan, but still. The concept of the casting couch is as old as the entertainment industry. Yet somehow, as society grudgingly started accomodating women's rights, we seem to have let Hollywood get away with it. Is it just because the entertainment industry is incestuous and we like to think they're all a bunch of sex fiends? I'm honestly wondering here.

And: what would be a good way to start exorcising this poo poo? The crash/burn of Weinstein and Spacey won't scare off the other predators forever. I'm thinking like studios mandating that one-on-one casting sessions are no longer allowed, though the Hoffman story showed that's not foolproof either.

His point doesn't seem unfair. He says they should put the psychological work in to fix themselves and sincerely seek forgiveness for what they did. It's just that bringing that up right now is not only a really poor choice, but also smacks of asking to continue the old way of forgiving talented people their horrible crimes because they're talented.

That bit where he talks about his wife calming him down, oof. Gets you right here.

I wonder about accountability and holding up standards of behavior a lot lately, because it's now exploding in the entertainment industry and a lot of other fields of work, while in politics it seems like people are actually being protected from accountability more and more.

One of the few good things to come out of the popularity of social media is that people can now get their own story out before attempts to mute and smear them take effect.

I'm hugely disappointed by Tambor. It'd be nice if one of these fucks took actual responsibility for their misconduct and apologized, let alone come forward before they're accused. Though I get that it's legally unwise to do so.

There's still an awful lot of people who flat out don't get that this is about making women and men be heard about their abuse rather than stay silent in shame and especially fear of their (powerful) abusers. It drives me nuts when they try to make slippery slope arguments about how, soon, you can't tell a woman she's pretty anymore.

I don't think it's so much that Ansari's well liked, I think it's that it's a far more ambiguous situation going by the given story, and it's bringing all the "witch hunt/slipper slope!" folks out in confidence.

Ansari acted like a piece of poo poo to this woman. I hope he read the article and draws some conclusions about how dating life isn't his personal porn flick.

She acted naively. She seemed to think the night was going to turn into something more positive if she stuck around. It was repeatedly made clear that wasn't happening, because he didn't respect her boundaries.

Edit: you might ask why establish her responsibility at all when he was the one being an rear end in a top hat. I think you can draw two lessons from this account. Men, establish consent and stop trying to wear down women. They're not playing hard to get. They just don't want it. And women, when a guy repeatedly shows you he's a disrespectful prick, stop expecting that's just going to change, and loving leave.

Regarding the protester in the audience, I wonder about the use of always undercutting advocates in your own corner ("what about this thing you said, what about this thing you did years ago"). It's a thing that's especially prevalent on Twitter. She may have a good point about Rose, and certainly her silence on the subject of Victor Salvia deserves a response, but I feel like this hostile, accusatory tone serves nothing more than one's own sense of satisfaction, and hurts the movement's ability to gain traction.

Though I must admit, being a white cis male, nobody has ever asked me to tone down my plight.

And crying and screaming isn't a great reply either. If you're going to try and be a figurehead of abused women, you need elephant skin.

There are absolutely people who are not being taken advantage of and are instead using their sexuality to get ahead which would make those specific cases "consensual." However, just because both parties are consenting and mutually using each other doesn't make it right. It creates an atmosphere where that behaviour is expected which pressures those who are not willing participants to also participate or else they get shut out of work and provides cover for more explicitly abusive situations because of the idea that "that's just how it is." If the atmosphere is such that there's an advantage to using sex to get ahead then people will feel coerced to use sex to get ahead even without an explicit "have sex with me or you won't get the part" condition.

And let's not forget that Weinstein petulantly worked to professionally destroy any woman who wouldn't gently caress him, which Gilliam conveniently ignores.

From the moment this has been unfolding, I've kind of hoped a couple of actresses might come forward who did decide to accomodate Weinstein or some other high-placed lech to further their career, though I suppose there's no gain in doing that.

It's a little hard to judge this properly when you haven't seen or heard the actual incident of Tambor yelling at Walter. I'm seeing some tweets regarding some really lovely things James Gunn said/wrote in the past, stuff like jokes about pedophilia, rape and sexist/homophobic remarks about women. I was inclined to discredit it at first because it was Mike "douchebag" Cernovich pulling them up, but now I see Gunn himself sorry-not-sorrying in a lovely apology:

Basically: I already said sorry, I was just being an edgelord, I'm not that person anymore but I did nothing wrong yadda yadda.

I get that this might be some years back, but is it that hard to just say "yes, sorry, it was lovely and I apologize and I'm never going to say that poo poo again?" Why is apologizing so hard for these folks, does it just come with the territory?
