The most Legends of the Galactic Heroes anime I've seen is actually Sunrise's Real Robot followup to the original Gundam, Fang of the Sun Dougram. Clocking in at like 75 episodes, it's a long sprawling epic about an anti-Imperial colonial rebellion, but with robots and anime Che Guevera, while spending a great deal of time with the generals and politicians running the war.

yea probably, but it's a totally different beast SAC is a police procedural with a much cleaner cyberpunk aesthetic, as opposed to the original's late 80s gritty take or the new movies kinda Shenzhen meets Hong Kong with a splash of Apple and holograms

Related to the Gundam discussion, Armored Troopert VOTOMS is another military mecha franchise worth checking out even if it's not nearly as popular. VOTOMS is more of a hard sci-fi franchise where the principles and technology are a bit more realistic. Instead of having towering mecha the size of office buildings that could be taken out with any tank that has a big enough cannon, the VOTOMS are basically power armors about 4 meters high. The original series that came out in 1983 is supplemented over the years by a ton of OVAs, spinoff series, and movies. The story takes place at the end of a centuries long war between two space faring civilizations, the original cause of which is practically forgotten. There are no good guys in this universe, because everything operates according to the logic of martial law. Galactic warfare is kept going along by the sheer bureaucratic intertia of the military industrial complex, and instead of being super soldier chosen ones, mecha pilots are expendable cannon fodder. The real villains in this franchise are a military officer corps that ruthlessly exploits their rank and file for the sake of their own careers, often ordering massive suicidal offensives if only to maintain the economic demands of war economy. Where Gundam treats war with pathos, VOTOMS treats war with contempt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_p3V78PL5k Mecha Gojira posted:The most Legends of the Galactic Heroes anime I've seen is actually Sunrise's Real Robot followup to the original Gundam, Fang of the Sun Dougram. The ending is also amazing and is literally about the Death of God. Edit: Fair warning, the TV series may be my favorite anime of all time, but the OVA's vary in quality. My rule of thumb is if it's a prequel or side-story, it's fine. If it's a sequel, avoid like the plague. Top OVA spot goes to Armor Hunter Mellowlink; it's just too bad the best rips of the series are low-quality scans because the artwork and animation are otherwise gorgeous. Apparently it's a lot harder to find VOTOMS stuff than I thought it'd be in the US right now. There's plenty of one-off hour long OVAs uploaded on youtube, but I'm not even finding DVD sets.

Only the TV series ever got a DVD release over here, though it was a pretty sweet release that came in "Ammo Tin" boxes. And I don't even know if some of the VOTOMS OVA's ever got remasters even in Japan (the TV series remaster is loving amazing). They desperately need them.

I feel like most stuff done by Yoshiyuki Tomino is worth a watch. Even his less well-regarded stuff (like Brain Powerd) has at least some interesting themes or ideas. Oh, and there's Eureka Seven, which is about a kid joining a counter-culture revolutionary group in a world controlled by the military. It's pretty good, with a lot of character development, references to surfer culture and rave music and The Golden Bough and esoteric buddhism. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOE4Qfans9M I like it.
