sure. some of civilized society's greatest literary works were also banged out on ancient decrepit pens, paper and broken typewriters.

it just speaks to humanity's perseverance that we can use such horrible tools to create meaningful works

it's very microsoft to call a great number of things "one." like the word "one" sorta sounds cool, but is ultimately a bad description of a confusing mess of products.

kinda like naming a dev framework ".NET" --it sounds "cool" but what the gently caress? why is it like a web address? it's meaningless

Don't you just hate when you wind up in a store with people who are in a socioeconomic class that is pretty obviously about two levels lower than your own?
after the original Mac shipped in 1984, virtually every new computer system and new operating system had to have a graphical interface, even workstations

after the original NeXT Computer shipped in 1988, virtually every graphical environment was updated with a faux 3D look

the styling of the Windows 95 user interface was directly ripped off from NeXT, and it had about zero features that weren’t already in other operating systems already

so just what did Windows 95 do to “change the face of computing?”

people actually bought it.

by some estimates NeXT had more ISVs than deployed customer sites

consider all the people who would computer if they knew how to do anything beyond what "good commands or file names" their nephew had written down on a scrap of paper duct-taped to the banker's lamp on what is now the computer desk

here come windows 95, now instead of pecking out words with no understanding of what you're doing, you can click on little pictures that are there to deliberately hide what you're doing, isn't this fantastic

the reason this book exists, and is called "practical" fs design, is that it is the second be filesystem

the first one was some kind of fart-huffing pseudo database exercise that disappeared up its own rear end. the second attempt was radically simpler and more practical

windows 3.0 practically required a very high end PC, so high-end it competed with unix workstations. but it ran well in 4 MB of RAM, and all the UNIX GUIs ate poo poo with less than 32 MB.

for $10,000 you could get a loving amazing windows 3.0 system that ran like greased lightning, with 4 MB of RAM

or you could get a low-end UNIX workstation that had literally 4x the compute power, but took 30 seconds to alt-tab, because it spends all its loving time swapping in and out of RAM

that's how windows won

seriously, 100 MHz RISC chips were competing with 33 MHz 486es, and the 486es were winning

that's how important the RAM and swapping issues were

remember when apple used flops as a measure of compute performance because their architecture had the altivec unit and they had nothing else to go on

remember when apple constantly used photoshop's gaussian blur filter as a benchmark to demonstrate how a 500mhz g4 was comparable to a 1ghz pentium III

remember when they claimed their hardware was military-grade because the processor had a built in crypto unit

lol

i remember reading an article in macaddict circa 2001 where they had this huge multi-page infographic and explanation of pipeline bubbles and flushes were such a huge performance impediment to CISC processors that the 733mhz dual-processor g4 really was better than any of those comparably-priced dumb old 1.8 xeons
