My boss had a KL-ZE mx3 at one point. It was pretty fast. I think he was using the regular MX-3 ECU. Didn't see it mentioned but if you haven't noticed or mentioned it, you'll need the Subframe from a V6 MX3 as well. A guy I know from a Mazda club (miss my old second gen protege) did one on an MX3 or 323 as well. I should shoot a text over his way, tell him to join up here. He's done the poo poo, so he'd have some valuable insight.

I'm starting to recall a few more things. Not really relevant to your swap however. KF-ZE (or DE?) 2.0l V6 sold in Europe somewhere I believe? As I recall, the K series engine wasn't particularly suited for forced induction, though it was supposed to be a good candidate for a high revving all motor type dealie with the appropriate work done.

Sgt Fox posted:Yes, it is a Japanese RHD import. Keep in mind, this is the West coast of Canada. Not as uncommon as you would think. This particular truck was imported ten years ago by a guy who sold those minitrucks. Are you the dude that rebuilt the Rotary and got the last set of rotor chambers in North America or something?

Awwwww That reminds me of my old mazda (protege). I rebuilt the rear calipers and it was a motherfucker because I needed really long, thin snap ring pliers. I got some snap ring pliers with interchangeable tips and had to weld two sets together (seriously) to get them long enough to fit inside the piston bore. The welds lasted just long enough to take everything apart, and put it back together. They literally broke the moment I put the last snap ring in to place. Then the bleeder screw twisted off . I managed to weld that back together, and the heat miraculously was enough to loosen the bit that was stuck in the caliper. I always meant to change that bleeder, but never got around to it. I think I still have the replacement screws around somewhere.

Fo3 posted:So is the parking brake on those a rear caliper - ie no drum? Are those the type you have to wind the pistons back when doing a pad change? I'm just wondering because I've often heard of pistons you can't just compress back when doing a pad/rotor change, but all mine have had internal drum shoes for the parking brake so I have never needed to worry. I've only heard of fiat and vw having those types of parking brakes. On my Protege, and probably the 323/mx3 whatever. Probably other stuff too, there was a little bolt on the back of the caliper, you take out the bolt, insert an allen wrench and turn a little gear wheel type dealie to retract the caliper. gently caress, really? Wish I'd known. I always had problems with the adjustment wheels. Even after putting new (rebuilt) calipers on the back.

Sgt Fox posted:. I came across a Russian Mazda owners forum, which seemed to have made significant progress in decoding the different ECU types. Google translate saved the day and I was able to glean some good information. The information was mixed in with a healthy helping of mockery of decadent American pigs and their stupidity trying to just swap entire EPROMs. Excellent post. I learned some poo poo. Also, can you post some of that poo poo?

Suburban Dad posted:It can only be forced induction. I'm not saying he won't, or it can't be done, but as I recall, the K series V6 wasn't terribly suited for forced induction. Unlike the Mazda B series. It was good for a high revving NA applications though.

Applebees Appetizer posted:The BP is an underrated motor imo. It's a shame they didn't come in 323's in the states, you had to buy a Protege (4 door) to get one or get an Escort GT which had them as well. I had the BG Escort GT with a BP and it was a blast, one of the best cars I've owned. Had a second gen Protege LX (97 model year)with the BP. Canadian LXs came with it. God I miss that car. I didn't even like the car the first time I saw it, but I took it for a test drive at my mom's encouragement figured "gently caress it I'll flog the poo poo out of it, tell the guy I'm not interested and be done with it. Drove it and holy gently caress I was hooked.

They were factory test mules that managed to make their way to the public. I knew of a few including one that made its way to a guy on the old Protegetech yahoo group. I seem to recall him being from Quebec. Vaughan was his name. I won't put his last name up (probably doesn't matter anyway but for privacy sake), I remember his story of going to a Mazda dealer for some part and said it was a V6 pro, the parts guy was all "what the poo poo" and asked for the VIN, and then was all, "well holy gently caress really? drat"! At least one of you guys in the last couple posts should remember him. For some reason, the number of them out there that most readily pops in to my head is 6. I am (or was) a Protege OG. Second gen muthafuckaz. wesleywillis fucked around with this message at 20:25 on May 23, 2019 |

Was bored at work, did some searching. Apparently there were twelve. Cropped some poo poo out but left the relevant-ness including url for posts in case anyone wants to see for themselves. I wouldn't have gone to this much trouble to fabricate all this. I *think* there were some other posts about them in the group somewhere, which is why I'd heard about it, but thought it was a rumour (the post from "ask me" is me). This was the first that I can recall that was some sort of confirmation of it. The dude in question was known as being pretty knowledgeable about Pros back in the day, and didn't have any kind of reputation for bullshitting, lying or whatever. wesleywillis fucked around with this message at 20:49 on May 23, 2019 |

I think sock still posts in the fishing thread in Take a Hike! Just looked at the Protege FAQ for the first time in years, glad to see its still kicking around. Before I tracked down those old posts I sent a message off to Edwin on Fakebook asking what the guy's name was. We're currently debating their existence as he's got a part catalog with no mention of it, and a VIN list, that also doesn't mention it. I'm not trying to imply that they were something that you could buy at the dealer so much as I'm arguing that they were cars that actually DID exist. In limited numbers for testing purposes or whatever, that just happened to get out to the public.
