If someone were to say, use google, they'd come across a wikipedia page called Engine Configuration, which is about the number and placement of cylinders within an engine itself. The layout half of the equation will almost always point towards Automobile Layout, which is about drivetrain setups. Looking up "drivetrain layout" on wikipedia will return search results that lead in that very direction, instead of a page. What I'm saying here is a lot of people probably used google and wikipedia. Even I decided engine layout must've meant drivetrain. To me, engine layout immediately meant final orientation and placement of the engine as a unit but I was confused by the terminology. MrChips stated the question was intentionally meant to be open to interpretation.
