We should start a death pool for Malcolm Turnbulls reign as PM. I'm taking 5th February.

Guesses sheet updated

If a couple of thread regulars want to get edit access to the sheet to add any guesses I miss chuck me a PM. I'll try to keep it up to date based on the thread.

edit: I think whoever wins should also get the honour/punishment (delete as appropriate) of creating the next months thread.

I have seen some legitimate concerns that the way the NSW scheme is proposed could hurt producers that do smaller runs but at the same time it's hard to filter those real concerns out given that the whole industry screams bloody murder any time any deposit scheme is proposed.

lovely analogy as well since it's more like selling the family home and then renting it off the new owner.

Yeah Prime Minister Trumble is hosed.

Time for the pool.

Players (Essential Best Liberal Leader)

Turnbull (21%)
Bishop (19%)
Abbott (10%)
Dutton (4%)
Morrison (2%)

Now Turnbull is clearly shown to be the most popular out of the (miserable field), and given the Coalition's tendencies to totally ignore the will of the electorate until poo poo is literally on fire, you can count on that not to matter worth a poo poo.

Bets in!

Check the Turnbull Death Pool guesses to date here and then PM me or post in the thread to add yours everyone who hasn't yet.

When I was at uni (20 years ago) I actually minored in Aboriginal Studies. I still remember one of my units was about Aboriginals and the law, where we learnt about every single law ever passed in WA covering Aboriginals that included things like removal of children, controlling where they worked, what they got paid, how they got paid, how they could obtain permission to marry, curfews, restrictions on being in public places, etc etc. The treatment of Aboriginals in Australian society has always been horrific and the massive systemic disadvantage they suffer will probably always be thrown in the “too hard” basket by politicians.

There definitely is a real lack of educational focus on the history of Aboriginal people pre and post-settlement (or at least there was when I was at school). I did history as one of my year 12 subjects and I learnt all about Europe during WWI and WWII and the US/USSR Cold War, but not a thing about Australian history. I only know a little about Aboriginal society/culture/history because I went out of my way to learn about it at uni.

I think you'll find that teaching that is a betrayal of our glorious British heritage. Why would we teach kids about that stuff that happened all those decades ago when we could instead teach them about the 19th century monarchy?

As hosed as Australian politics can be, it's not as weird as right now where Roy Moores election night event has turned into two people sadly singing hymns on stage to a rapidly emptying room.

Interesting video of the day, ABC posted a clip from 1977 on gun control which has a journalist walking up and down the street carrying a rifle to see peoples reactions.

Just ignore the comments which are filled with old people blaming gun control on multiculturalism.

Definitions for generations don't really get settled until we have the hindsight of history, but most times I see Millennia used it goes up to mid 90's birth. I think that will end up sticking long term as the next generation will be those whose first solid memories are around/after 9/11. Between that and the GFC they will be the first generation since WWII who came of age in a time when they had less opportunities and more perceived threats than their parents.

I imagine there are quite a few backbenchers who have been running the numbers on if they could switch to independent and get some nice pork barreling for their communities in return for supporting the government.

Well it looks like they put a hat on this one, at least.

That said, Apple does not bow to the whims of practicality or effective design.

Yeah, Rundle Mall in Adelaide has covered areas on both sides of the mall the whole way down, until Apple moved in and threatened to cancel their development unless they were given special permission to have the front of their store be uncovered. Meaning that in hot or wet weather the section in front of their store sucks for anyone walking through the mall.

Yeah, I think there might be more to this story - Centrelink have been more than happy to assess you as being in a relationship, even if it's a same sex one since 2009 (which is apparently now long enough to be a tradition) and actually being married or not doesn't have all that much to do with it. Same sex marriage has nothing to do with this.

Sounds like one of those weird edge cases:

quote:

The woman’s partner is not an Australian citizen or resident and lives overseas, and the couple does not share finances. The Tasmanian woman was claiming family tax benefits on the basis that she previously did not satisfy requirements to be classified as a de facto partnership. And yet, after she declared her 2016 overseas marriage after the legislation was passed, not only has Centrelink decided to retroactively recognise that marriage, but also nullify its own ruling that she did not satisfy the requirements of de facto status.

Seems pretty believable to me that Centrelink would say in that particular case they didn't meet the legal criteria to be listed as a de facto couple, until they started legally recognising the marriage.
