i imagine the tank shell was probably an intimidation tactic in hopes that they could blunt the expected wave of protests that day. by using overwhelming force against some poor random farmer early enough to make the morning news, they hoped to discourage people from going to the protests by flaunting their willingness to use ruthless and brutal tactics against unarmed civilians for no reason

Nobody believes that. They use overwhelming force on one or two people to stoke these protests, and then exploit their overwhelming bias in Western media to make it look like the uppity Gazans are at it again, and Hamas is just stirring up trouble. It's part of a long term strategy to manage the conflict by riling people up and then putting as heavy a price on resistance as possible.

Sometimes seemingly useless stuff ends up carrying extreme symbolic weight, and while to any outside observer the tire seems weird I'm sure to them it meant a lot.

Anyway, I thought it was odd that the media couldn't avoid the fact that this was a completely one-sided massacre, so I'm sure the way it'll play out in the next few days is that it'll be mostly ignored then completely forgotten when a retaliatory attack happens.

The United Nations urged both sides to avoid violence and said there were “strong indications” that Israeli security forces had used excessive force last week in driving back protesters, which may have breached international law.

Elizabeth Throssell, a spokeswoman for the United Nations human rights office in Geneva, said the high casualty toll among protesters who were unarmed or did not pose a serious threat to security forces — and in some cases were running away from the fence — suggested Israeli troops may have used excessive force.

Some protesters had reportedly acted dangerously, but international law permits the use of lethal force only as a last resort in the face of an imminent threat of death or serious injury, she said. “An attempt to approach or cross the green-line fence by itself certainly does not amount to a threat to life or serious injury that would justify the use of live ammunition,” she said.

“If there is unjustified and unlawful recourse to firearms resulting in death, that may amount to willful killing and that’s a grave breach of the fourth Geneva Convention,” she added.

I'm really tired of all the chickenshit non-committal language.

Zionists have always argued like this for years. You'd think at some point they'd realize that apologizing for child murder, bombing refugee centers, and dropping white phosphorous on schools would be counterproductive but they really think they're proving some kind of point. This is all becoming purely for internal consumption, until Israeli identity becomes a fully realized fascist cult.

If You Call the Gaza Death Toll 'Disproportionate,' How Many Israelis Have to Die for the Sake of Symmetry? :thunk:

quote:

The death toll in Gaza has left me reeling. Many of the dead were innocents; some were children. Each and every death was tragic, rending the heart.

And the questions had to be asked: Who was to blame? Was Israel the guilty party? Had the Israeli army acted carelessly, shooting hastily into crowds of helpless civilian protestors? Or, even worse, were the killings an intentional act of cruelty, intended to teach a lesson to the hated Hamas enemy?

For some, the answers were easy.

Eddie Glaude Jr., a professor of religion at Princeton, said on MSNBC Monday that the only important thing was that "all of those babies are dead." To the claim that Hamas was using those dead children as tools in their political struggle, he offered these words: "That’s like saying the children in the Children’s March in Birmingham - it is their fault that Bull Connor’s attacking them."

Excuse me?

Is a professor at Princeton really saying that the leaders of Hamas, known for their wholesale murders, casual cruelties, obsessive anti-Semitism, and devious terror are somehow comparable to the leadership of the American civil rights movement?

And that Israel’s need not to be overrun by huge, angry mobs of terrorists and demonstrators is equivalent to Bull Connor’s desire to perpetuate permanent segregation of black and white in America? And that the prayers of civil rights leaders that their children not be harmed are equivalent to the desire of Hamas leaders that their children be wounded or killed? :qq:

I was watching Eddie Glaude Jr. when he was on MSNBC, and it was an incredible genuine human moment that was immediately snuffed out by changing the subject.
