Horseshoe theory

Don't worry, he'll be back as soon as he pushes a poison pill bill that collapses the government (ala the King-Byng Affair) in the next few weeks/months.

Horseshoe theory
Mar 7, 2005

What's going to stop Likud from shoveling a "Kill all Muslims" bill and forcing an up-down vote in order to force Yamina, etc. to either back it (and collapse the coalition) or to vote against it/vote to block it from going to a vote (and get it used against them at the next election)? I just don't see how it's going to last 2 months, much less 2 years since Bibi holds the ability to collapse the coalition pretty easily since there are very few areas of overlap other than "gently caress Bibi".

i'm not as familiar witih pre-independence but the dividing lines were always there. labor dominated the first half of israel's existence, while Herut was a fringe right-wing party made up of militias from before and during '48. you'll see Menachim Begin's name pop up lots in this period, dunno his economic politics but it's possible you could compare him to a Le Pen figure. his influence steadily grows until he's able to form a government in the late 70s mirroring the right-wing shift in the US and UK. herut merges witih likud in the late 80s, netanyahu is begin's political successor and the rest is the story of labor zionism's continued decline in the face of revisionist zionism and ultra-orthodox

at the moment there's a secular zionist government in power but as you'll note it hasn't been the norm since '77, and is more defined as anti-netanyahu than a coherent ideology other than regular zionism

I'd also add that Revisionist Zionism under Jabotinsky, Begin, Shamir, etc. was basically Italian fascism (they in fact supported Mussolini's black shirts for a good while until there was backlash). Both Labor and Revisionist Zionism have big Ashkenazi supremacy vibes (and not just rabidly anti-Palestinian/Muslim), although Labor (Mapai) masked it better. Like Begin and later Netanyahu with Herut/Likud, Ben-Gurion basically ran a cult of personality around himself for the first 25 years or so of the Labor/Mapai party.

Yeah, they were basically Kingmakers rather than material minority members so they'll prop up Likud (and years ago, Mapai/Labour) in return for controlling the religious aspects of the government and unlimited money for their constituents to be in Yeshiva all day or whatever. This is the first coalition where they're big enough to have forced serious cabinet posts, etc. as part of the coalition forming with Bibi.
