Also, maybe it was here but somebody somewhere posted a clip of the sandworm attack from Dune 2 with the music from the Lynch version and it was awesome. Does anybody have that?

This is awesome. Everyone probably knows this, but the Toto soundtrack is available on iTunes. Mostly just music from the film, but with a couple of the best spoken word pieces. (E.g., the Baron's "The Duke will die before these eyes, and he'll know, he'll know...!")

You don’t like this guitar riff? How about if I played it 100 times more?? Lynch Dune has a great soundtrack overall but they definitely beat that motif to death towards the end of the movie. It’s so joyous and triumphant you almost get sick of them winning. Idk if it’s trying to be meta or if the band were so proud of it they couldn’t say no.

Nothing against Toto, but I wonder how it came to be that they did the score and Brian Eno just did the theme.

The answer is that Lynch temped the Prophecy scenes with Brian Eno and told Toto he wanted something like that, and eventually was just like “whatever, I’ll just have Brian Eno do it”

I'm planning a Dune themed porta potty for an event I host. Its gonna mostly have an easy listening soundtrack to it, like Phil Collins, Kenny G, and so on. It'll have really lovely AI art with guys in stillsuits playing the sax as well as the occasional AI song about sandworms and stuff. Probably some fremen themed live/laugh/love posters as well.

this rules, i think 2ne was missing a lot of this like, they skipped the "gently caress YEAH, JIHAD!" bit, and went straight to the self-aware "maybe this jihad is going to get out of control" before we even got to hoot and holler at the harkonnens getting owned. give us the jihad cheeseburger denis. we don't need the jihad salad until part three!!!

Prompted by the release of the movies, I am now reading Dune for the first time. I like how fleshed out the characters are and how grounded the setting feels. Currently at the part where the Baron is plotting to replace Piter with Thufir, something that was not in Villeneuve's version. When I was around 10 years old, I tried reading God Emperor, because that was the book they had at the library. I stopped reading when some guy started turning himself into a sandworm (wtf?). I think I was a little too young for that kind of book back then.

I'm sure there's some kind of pattern behind which scenes in Dune 2 have subtitles and which don't, but I'm too stupid to puzzle it out. Any thoughts?

Also some scenes show people using hand signals as code that are subtitled even though no ones talking. (It's a great little nod to the book's "battle languages" imo)

There’s some weird sex stuff in God Emperor but mostly in dialogue or subtext (Leto is a giant penis) rather than the weird sex stuff actually happening.

A couple of complaints about Dunc2. The Fremen are not jihad-y enough. If I remember the book correctly, they're absolutely religious loonies. The film has religion be optional to Fremen, to the point that Chani and her friends are happy taking the piss out of Stilgar while he's praying: it also portrays them as super insular, and dedicated completely to Arrakis and their vision of it. They don't seem like they're so religious they'd go on a massive crusade to convert the galaxy, anyway. Also the lasers are great, and terrifying, but having established their almost limitless destructive potential in a couple of scenes, there's no need for nuclear weapons. Just wiggling a laser at the emperors army would transform them into the world's largest bowl of salsa. For that matter, the Harkonnens could have sliced up worms threatening their harvesters. Otherwise fantastic in all regards, an improvement on the first in the series, and so much better than it's source material they might as well be different properties entirely.

Obviously they don't wear them in the open desert, but do the Fremen wear shields inside the sietch? How about when they're invading other planets, do the Fremen wear shields off world?

priznat posted:Lasguns are only used in specific scenes to look cool and we should not think too hard about why they weren’t used other times in the very first scene of 2 one of the harkonnen soldiers explicitly calls out "no shields" I think the filmmakers were very conscious of lasgun usage in the films, even though there were some apparently sloppy moments like the harkonnens firing on duncan's thopter in 1. I have enough faith in the films to attempt to explain these things in universe—i.e. shields are rarely used in the desert so it's safer to use lasguns, duncan's shield was shown to be disabled before being fired upon by a lasgun—rather than "denis hosed up" the only caveat is the feyd-rautha paul fight, absolutely no reason for them not to use shields other than they thought it made the scene look better without them

If I remember the book correctly, people didn't use shields in the desert because it had the effect of making every sandworm within a couple dozen kilometers make an enraged beeline for it

Yeah it's a convenient thing that Herbert creates just negate his other invention. Hmmm I made up shields. But like I can't have the Fremen wear them, they need to be sexier than some kind of beta rear end shield. Okay no shields in the desert becauuuuuse...it makes the worms go CRAZY? Lust for blood! I mean, more then normal. Ultrabloodlust.

Also IIRC the Arrakis desert is a pretty hostile environment for electronics in general (the eternally blowing sands create a lot of static electricity discharges) which is one of the reasons that Fremen use non-electronic devices wherever they can (thumpers, ceilagos, those plastic dew-catchers, etc.)

The flame around the emperor's orb ship during the dust storm might also help explain why shields aren't great in deserts. It looks like the shield is trying to block every wind blown dust particle
