My pet theory was that the SD Gundams were ELS-human hybrids (a thing that Trailblazer showed to be possible in its ending) that literally became Gundam due to Setsuna’s influence in the ELS hivemind. However, that theory isn’t as solid due to, one, being based on a movie plot point that UX hasn’t acknowledged, two, not every Mirishan being a Gundam, and, three, going against the central point of this conversation which is MACHINES becoming human. Final battle with the Vajra, but this start is pretty much a repeat of the previous battle – only with rougher terrain for your land-bound units. Same strategy as before applies, and you won’t even have stuff coming from both ends of the map. As we saw, the Galaxy folk are holed up in the NW corner and all reinforcements’ll be coming from that end. Move as a united front and tear through the Vajra as you would – you’ve plenty of command auras to offset their evasiveness, even without Kongming’s boosts. Queen Frontier Pilot Skills: Prevail L8 Support Attack L3 Break Morale Limit All Attack L3 Command L4 Mech Features: Fold Barrier 30% HP and EN Regen All-Canceller Following our showdown with Hazard, we’ve yet another battleship boss, with all that that entails. Of note is the Macross Cannon MAPW, which blasts a 3x9 directional AoE (width is 4 from squares 5 to 8), but that’s only a problem if you let them get the morale to use it. A couple of Daunt casts should be more than enough to remedy it if all you’ve left to fight are the enemy reinforcements. The galaxy honchos have plenty good stats and the Queen Frontier’s the bulkiest enemy we’ve had to face yet, but it’s nothing we haven’t dealt with before. Spread out your guys, approach from various angles if you can’t get their morale below 130 and let ‘em have it. As is true to all Macross Cannons, the Frontier can only shoot it from range 3 and beyond.  VF-27γ Lucifer F-SP (Brera Stern) Pilot Skills: Support Attack L2 Support Defense L1 Counter Predict All Attack L1 Spirit Commands: Accelerate Sense Snipe Confuse Soul Brera’s Squad Bonus: Mobility +5, Accuracy +5 (Mobility +30, Accuracy +30, 35% chance to Double Image, Movement +2) Brera’s voice actor: Soichiro Hoshi Brera’s not as massively overpowered as he was back in L, and he doesn’t get a combo with Alto, but he’s still VERY competent with stats, evasion and firepower on par with the YF-29. Loads of range and all his attacks are still ammo-based, so he can fit right in with a whole bunch of people. Accelerate and Confuse already make him a priority pick, being able to fly, boost the squaddie’s movement range and packing good firepower means he ought to be one of the first units you turn to in order to supplement any gaps in your formation.     : This song’s lit a fire in me… What you see is the heart I’ve recovered due to Ranka!: And I’ll go on soaring through this sky, hand-in-hand with those emotions! The Frontier Fleet’s Earth, like Planet Ladorio and Mirisha, is a different future version of Earth… : Wh-What…?!: …: All those possible universes lie spread across a spiderweb centered around this one…: In the end, we were all born in the exact same universe…: …: There is only one beginning…Now, let’s go over everything we learned on this mission because I expect a lot of  ing. I gave this a good amount of thought, hit the wikis, and worked myself into a head-splitting migraine, and here’s my take on it: As we learned from Shou’s Byston Well and whatnot, the universe undergoes cycles (the Samsara). The universe, across each cycle, goes off in a different direction and there are endless divergent possibilities it can follow. In one universe, it led to Shou’s world, with his Byston Well; in another, it led to Mirisha; in another, it led to the world where the SDF-1 Macross fell; in another, Earth became the Vajra homeworld; in another, it led to Planet Ladorio, etc. In regards to the Vajra, as proven by Yog-Sothoth’s presence – it working like Chrono Trigger’s Black Omen, in that it exists concurrently everywhere in time – the buggers’ homeworld is also another possible future of Earth, which was brought over to our world (either by the Queen Folding it here – as she’s wont to do in SRW – or by something else). The Macross Earth proper, where the SDF-1 fell, is yet another possible future, wherein the planet was home to humans. Ultimately, these were never actually parallel universes – because that’d imply they exist side-by-side – but, rather, alternate possible futures, spread across different cycles, for a single universe. While every cycle may turn out differently, they all have the same starting point. That is why all life – even the alien ones – shares a common origin: this universe; in time, it diverges into one of an infinitude of possible paths, until it resets again. All those alternate futures of Earth were self-contained within their respective cycles, but something went and brought many of them here, where it all starts – “gather at the beginning”. Phew, that’s it for the show and tell. Now, getting Brera, as you might expect, is the Macross Frontier secret (and the sole reason it takes 3 runs to get all secrets, due to the Europe route carrying one of his flags, and nothing else). If you couldn’t be arsed to go for him over a whole other bunch of great units, like sane people, the scenes change appropriately – starting at the end, once you’ve downed the Battle Frontier: (middle-aged man): Blast you all! But we just have to eliminate Code Q1 and Fairy 9, and…!: Absolutely not!: Haaaah! RANKAAAAAA!*Kamikaze!* (young man): Hrgh… There’s interference in our mental-affinity field! We can’t control the Queen!: (B-Brother…!): Now, Alto…! Don’t waste the opening Brera gave you!And then the rest is the same. Well then, I did not expect a plot-critical mission as the Frontier ending, but here we are. In the beginning, I guess. I think I understood everything and man, that's a really interesting lore. While the explanation naturally appeared close to the end, we had hints of it during the entirety of the game, and it all works together in a way that's far more interesting than modern SRW's "a bunch of universes got fused together" most common explanation. Also good loving job Shot. Since he's immortal as far as I understand, I hope he enjoys eternal nothingness.

All of the Frontier nonsense is almost worth it just for this song. I'm honestly kinda loving how Leon and the Army of Mankind get easily chumped by Shot Weapon. I mean gently caress it, why not right? It's honestly a better end than boring villains like them deserve anyway. A weirdly sympathetic ending for Grace at the end there compared to the series. Well... I liked it. Brera is boring as gently caress as usual and could have just been straight up excised from the movies at no loss. He's literally just "Alto needs a capital-R Rival" and nothing else. And so the game's big plot twist is... kinda the same as the one in Z? An infinitely recurring loop where timelines converge and then split again, except they're alternate futures instead of parallel worlds. It's a good plot for a massive crossover SRW, I don't blame them for reusing it.

The ELS and Festum showing up was a very cool moment. That said when I played at first I thought they were there to fight and Misao would actually get to use assimilation, but guess not. Not much else to say on this mission. It's Frontier, the music is at least good, we have one of UX' trademark watch every unit power up bits, and it's really silly the secret is effectively locked behind a third playthrough. You could get everything else besides him on two.

They are very similar, but not the same: the original Z is basically the mirror of UX, where each world has one shared past that keeps repeating until the worlds split and regroup again, whereas UX has one origin world that creates many possible (and presumably, mutually exclusive) futures. Of course, UX hasn't explained why the future keeps looping back to the past, but it's almost certainly because none of the futures actually see humanity survive; considering what just happened, the elder gods are probably to blame.

I find it quite fitting that Will is the one to bluntly spell it out to Brera that he's Ranka's brother, no matter what's happened to him. A nice touch given that both Will and Brera share a similar path (start out normal, then get transformed/controlled by their respective villains, then break free of the control) over the course of their series. That said, I do find it interesting that for all the changes Frontier's movie does, the final battle is...almost the same as in the original TV show. The final villain (Grace in the show, the Galaxy Fleet's...weird hivemind thingie) fuses with the Vajra Queen to be the final threat, Alto has a moment where it looks like he's died in the battle but ends up alive and well, Brera breaks free of his control during the final battle to assist Alto, Sheryl and Ranka unite to combine their singing powers, and finally the big love triangle is still a mess after all is said and done. That's...depressing when you think about it. All that effort put into two movies retelling the story of Frontier, and the best ending they could come up with was "Let's do the show's finale all over again, except with a few details changed this time!" Talk about a wasted amount of time.

Or SRW using Frontier for TEN straight games when L and UX pretty much do a good job covering them, especially UX given how it has been tying everything together into the overarching plot very well. Well at least in Z it got to be alongside the much more fun Macross 7, even if we ignored the plot of 7. But yes, it got pretty old. I've always had mixed feelings about the change in ultimate antagonists between TV Frontier and Movie Frontier. On one hand, Grace and Mishima are very uncompelling and add conspiratorial layers to a plot that frankly doesn't deserve them. On the other hand, Galaxy SEELEE would have needed to take their place in the plot from very early on in order to feel remotely up to the job description of being big bads vs a bunch of Macross-class units. So, the Frontier movies in a nutshell: They're super giffable, have even better music than the show, the fanservice recital in the prison is very fun, they actually solved the love triangle and I think the final battle is much better than any other action scene in the show. The problem is that only one of those things was an actual weakness of the show, and so most of Frontier's faillings in characterization and plot are still present. Real good mission though! And I dig the twist on the parallel universe crossover they're going for this time. Only in this game could you get the mental image of the ELS creating a world full of SD Gundam people as a result of "dialogues" with Setsuna. He and Ayul are the same as ever (unless you MAPW, the plot kicks in once one is dropped), but now the piddly Army of Mankind mooks have all left and you’re faced with nothing but Riots, all having plenty of HP and decent stopping power for mooks and regen EN, so they can be plenty liberal with their biggest weapons. Also, the standard “green soldiers” that piloted the Riots have been replaced with upgraded “PURPLE soldiers”, which actually have pretty impressive stats for mooks (plus L3 on both Support Skills). Keep an eye out. That said, our guys are upgraded enough that major players should be able to two shot the Riot Cs.  And special note should be given to the brand new Riot Xs – the final form of the Riots. Like the Riot C, it covers both short and long range well and it has a good bunch of power on both of its primary weapons (4200 to 4100), so make sure not to eat a clean hit with someone who isn’t tanky. If anything, the strongest, point-blank attack has +20 accuracy modifier, so engaging at range 2 is best, since it’ll force them to use their vulcans.  Despite what Master Therion said, he’ll immediately make a beeline for Kurou, so you don’t need to worry about his mooks (though only the Dagons and Riot Xs are any sort of threat). He’s unlocked both his Hyperborea Zero-Drive and Shining Trapezohedron attacks since our last battle, so be very careful when engaging him – a clean hit from the Trapezohedron will oneshot most units and leave bulky Supers severely injured. Thankfully, like Kurou’s, both weapons can only be used point-blank. He doesn’t have MAPWs, though, so you could have Kurou tank him while you grab the mooks for cash (do note that Arnie’s still injured from the event battle, so make sure to heal him up). FYI, the plot kicks in when you get him under 210k HP. Secret Alert!Demonbane secret – 11th step: set Ruri as your tactician and take out Master Therion with Kurou. Same as always. Oh, and do be warned of something: there’s a “bug” in this stage, in that if both Kurou and Therion (triggering Counter) attack with their Shining Trapezohedrons in the same battle, the game will crash. You can avoid this by skipping the animation or outright turning the battle animation off. I say “bug” because many people, myself included, find this to be too perfect to not be an intended feature due to reasons we’ll see in a jiffy. Nyarly can’t even touch it, and the only thing that can break the Trapezohedron is another one, so she found a second in a past cycle and worked to get two people strong enough to wield the things. Trapezohedrons collide, and all the trapped Outer Gods and Great Old Ones are freed to tear through the universe again. By the by, now you know why Tiberius flipped out once he saw the thing. I forgot to take a picture but here’s what he has: Pilot Skills: Sorcerer L9 Grimoire L9 Prevail L9 Support Attack L2 Break Morale Limit Counter Predict Guard All Attack L1 Command L4 Spirit Commands – Therion: Sense Mercy Fury/Direct Hit Drive Soul Spirit Commands – Etheldreda: Accelerate Focus Trust Iron Wall Love Squad bonus: Melee AND Ranged Weapons’ attack power +100 (Melee and Ranged Weapons +300, 35% chance to trigger Double Image, Spec Debuff Immunity) And Master Therion, as you might expect, is an absolute powerhouse for reasons that have been exposed since mission 4. While Kurou’s new Final Shining Trapezohedron is the second strongest attack in the game in terms of raw power, losing only to the 4 SD Gundam combo, Therion actually has better burst damage due to knowing Soul – only Liu Bei and Cao Cao can hit harder by virtue of stacking Soul and the Soul of the Three Sovereigns buff, and only with the combo. I’m going to FUB him and laugh like a real sonuvagun! No, Jin. No matter how much you and your counterparts try to hype you up, there is no way that such a hollow motivation could give you any kind of determination. And the Riot X's and PURPLE out of nowhere just doesn't gel with how pathetic his faction has been ever since Act 1 ended. At least X found some interesting things to do with their surplus of rivals. This is just bleh. On the other hand, the battle with Master Therion was great. I suspect the real bug is that you can skip the crash by preventing the animations from playing. His recruitment wasn't great but there's no way it could be, so it's best to just move on and enjoy whatever he has to say to the final boss.

The purple soldiers seemed unusual when I saw and fought them. See how they were completely silent. I guess there's nothing particularly special about them, at least mentioned in the dialogue. Also I thought Ayul was confessing to Jin when she blew up, but I guess she sort of kind of already did? That aside, yeah. Did feel Jin was kind of weak as a rival. When I played through, I found it strange how Arnie tried to kill his former best friend without hesitation whenever he could. I mean, now having read this LP it kind of fits with the bit about being able to pull the trigger or not, but it still seemed really excessive. His motivations not really being clear don't help much in that regard, either. Do remember playing this stage being a bit awkward in getting everyone over to Master Therion. I know I took over the Three Kingdoms Trio - only them because first playthrough - and they dropped a number of their combo attack on him. Also partially because I'd expended all of Sakomizu's EN and he was far away anyway. Small headsup for the finale just in case, something semi-obscure, the final boss' ultimate attack has a dynamic kill! Make sure you don't miss catching it! To explain. In Demonbane Ruri's route has two endings, and you can't get the true one without first getting the bad one. In this case, the bad ending leads to Al and Kurou losing against Master Therion and Kurou being blasted back in time in another rendition of the universe. There, he meets a dying man by the name of Hadou who knows the location of gold in the place where Arkham city would be founded. Kurou takes the dying mans name, and basically devotes his fortune to the next cycle of fighting Therion. Ruri is not actually his granddaughter, because the actual Grandfather Hadou had already done those deeds. I mean Demonbane is a porn VN about elder gods and sex with Nyarlathotep but it's not also an incest porn VN. Anyway, you have to get that ending first, and then the next cycle through you can get the Ruri True End. God, I love how this game fits all these moving pieces together and how it makes them all work together. It's so GOOD.

To be honest, one of my favorite parts of Demonbane has got to be those incantations. They're a mixture of ritualistic incantation and cheesy as hell speeches, and somehow they just work

As lame as Jin is, I find Arnie's growth and position as protagonist to be one of the stronger takes. The cycle of life has been a running theme the entire game along with "What lies beyond?" In comparison to the first time, we met Arnie, he's pretty much just going with the flow of life, and you can see the parts of Richard and his relationship with Saya develop as the game grows, and how he's active in the plot and its events. Going back to L for comparison, beyond a few moments with GreAT overall, the protagonist whose name I can't even really remember without actively checking it is just... there. But everything to this point, the Army of Mankind, the various factions, the constant connecting themes, have helped Enrich Arnie's story with the stories of those around him. I don't think it's as strong as the Alpha Series or Z1, but there's a good level of "Arnie matters in this story" as opposed to an MX of "The protagonists are present I guess?"

I liked how the love part only had people with canon, and reciprocated, love interests talk (Allelujah, Athrun, Kira, Kazuki, Alto). It makes for a stronger scene, I think, and again shows how good UX is at using every character it has. That said, I find it really weird that Lu Bu gets outright called upon yet he says nothing. He's not exactly the silent type...but it's a minor thing. Despite Jin being lackluster, I think his ending was good. It's clear that he's fighting not for justice but for his ideals, and there's no real good or evil in the clash. It overall works better than the same plot beat with Joe and Ylbora, partly because for all Jin doesn't do he's still so much better than Ylbora, but also because his side was never portrayed as evil in the first place, unlike Ylbora downright joining the Blatantly Evil Aliens. The second half of the mission was undeniably the stronger one though, the illusion was really good and I liked how other series got to participate in it. I wish it went a bit beyond what it did, but it's fine like this too, and I can understand why the focus is only on Demonbane itself, Heroman (which this game has always connected directly with Demonbane) and the OG characters. It's short and to the point like this, which is good too. I couldn't care about Master Therion's sudden extreme despair, tbh. But it's fine because it ends with him getting his face caved in, which is very deserved. Final Shining Trapezohedron was awesome, and in general I'm a sucker for cute lovey-dovey stuff so that helped too. It's not at the top of Love Attacks, because it's definitely no Burger King, but it's very good. Master Therion should've just kicked the bucket there though, there's no real reason to believe he could ever switch sides, but that's one hell of a powerful secret so I can accept this is entirely for gameplay purpouses. It's hard to believe we're nearly at the end, which is also, the Beginning. Or something.

The thing to understand about Therion is he's done this song and dance much longer than anyone else, and he hasn't had the benefit of getting his memory wiped at the end of it. He's bored. He's so unbelievably overpowered and the only person who can match him, Kurou, he has beaten so often and so thoroughly that it's started to lose meaning. Existence for him is literally waiting until things start to maybe sort of look exciting. The difference this time is Kurou has been assisted by so many independent variables like Joey and now things actually look exciting again. But he himself has always known that it didn't matter if he won or lost, the world would go on repeat, he's literally playing things out because it's all he can do, he can't die permanently, he can't really win, and nothing's even beaten him.
