Epic High Five posted:The Greatship rec Thirding Blindsight. I liked Echopraxia a lot too, which had just as many weird and cool ideas. Hate Watt's other stuff, though.

If you're going to read any Culture stuff, try Excession. The Culture books, as a whole, are (rightfully IMO) regarded as pretty boring, because helpful technology is even more ubiquitous than in the Greatship stories. The Culture itself is basically utopian and permissive to a fault, and while it paints a nice picture of far future gay luxury space anarcho-syndicalism it's not very exciting most of the time. The worst thing Culture human(oid)s ever seem to have to deal with is melancholy or embarrassment. That said, Excession has actual conflict and gets into the minds of Ships (godlike Culture AI), which is the most interesting stuff in the entire setting.

Yeah for sure, they're not episodic and you can jump in pretty much wherever.

Epic High Five have you ever read any of Stephen Baxter's Xeelee stuff? After Greatship I got a little burnt out on the Marrow books and wanted another hard-ish sci fi short story collection and picked up Vacuum Diagrams and really like it so far.

I just finished beloved curmudgeon Peter Watt’s new novella The Freeze-Frame revolution and it is really good. The secret message story is fun and there’s a few free short stories in the same universe on his website. Also, Dickinson’s The Traitor Baru Comorant and while it’s neither really sci fi nor particularly leftist it was also very good and deserves a heads up. like ASOIAF if gurm was a good writer
