I just finished Authority, the followup to soon-to-be-movie Annihilation I'm probably the only person in the world who enjoyed it as much or more than Annihilation. The latter was a fun book but I am, quite frankly, sick to loving death of Lovecraftian horror poo poo and it leaned quite heavily on it, especially near the end when I started kind of skimming. Authority is the followup centering around the institution that has been tasked to research Area X and it plays out like a supernaturally mysterious drama of bureaucratic infighting and power struggled, with a Lovecraftian end that wasn't so hammered on. I enjoyed it, but not sure I enjoyed it enough to move onto book 3

I've been reading this slowly over the last month or so, one short story at a time It's quite awesome so far. The premise is that there is a Jupiter-sized ship, billions of years old, that was found traveling the depths of space and claimed as salvage by humanity and built up and established by them, that has become home to thousands of alien species and millions of humans - all made effectively immortal by scientific advances so some stories span thousands of years with the same characters - and the interactions and stories that crop up as a result. Everything I have read so far has been awesome and unique and made me think, and the first one "Alone" is a truly unqiue and very sci-fi tale in the vein of what Asimov would've written if he had been influenced heavily by Philip K Dick Not all stories are limited to the ship itself, but do not suffer for it at all...in one, the character effectively gestates for 10,000 years and then lands on a planet where she "dies" a couple times before being declared as a god, then you get to watch her live through the roilings and upheavals of being the deified figure head of thousands of years of governance as she herself tries to find her place in the world with nobody to help or guide her I highly recommend it Epic High Five has issued a correction as of 04:41 on Dec 21, 2017 |

deep web creep posted:Picked up The Greatship last night and really like it so far. It strikes me like a harder Culture series with actual stakes and a way more interesting setting. Alone and Mere are two of my fav short stories ever, good pick putting them near the front. Never read any of the Culture stuff, but if it runs on themes similar to the early stories I'll check it out StashAugustine posted:Blindsight was really good but incredibly loving depressing This is a big reason why I liked it. If you want something along the same lines (encountering something truly alien) that is less depressing, check out Solaris.

Echopraxia is pretty great so far, I look forward to following the adventures of a vampire who isn't wholly or partially just a puppet of the ship because human psychology would trust a killer before it trusted a machine. Not quite far enough in yet to render judgement on whether or not people who believe this was a huge letdown from the first one are correct or dumb or not.

Just finished The Greatship and it ruled. The ending stories are considerably less of an exploration of the ship and more of the universe, but not the worse for it. I don't think I'll remember any of them with as much fondness as I do Alone and Mere, but I highly recommend the book to any hard sci-fi or nerds who like stuff on grand, highly creative scales

TheDon01 posted:The only Lem I've read was Solaris. It was good, but slow and not an action packed book at all. Does he have any other notable scifi books? I haven't read terribly much of his yet, but what I've read has been more contemplative than action packed, though the "it's all talking" doesn't approach Asimovian levels or anything. There's also the first half of Starship Troopers, which is a fun read as long as you stop when he gets to Officer School

Last and First Men is a ponderous tome that I'd probably like less if it didn't start out by explaining that capitalism, and American finance and hubris in particular, strangled a newly forming movement to truly advance human civilization and then plunged it into a thousands year long dark age

Hell right now Id sit down and read just a timeline of what all happened on earth in those thousandish years. If you're just looking to embed yourself deeper in the universe then you'll probably love the followups. All the negative reviews I saw were like with Echopraxia - hoping it would be as groundbreaking as the original, which is almost impossible since it's set in the same world

The Lathe of Heaven, one of my absolute favorites by Ursula K Le Guin, is only $1 today on Amazon for the ebook: https://www.amazon.com/Lathe-Heaven-Ursula-K-Guin-ebook/dp/B00JTZ95I0quote:In a world beset by climate instability and overpopulation, George Orr discovers that his dreams have the power to alter reality. Upon waking, the world he knew has become a strange, barely recognizable place, where only George has the clear memory of how it was before. He seeks counseling from Dr. William Haber, a psychiatrist who immediately understands how powerful a weapon George wields. Soon, George is a pawn in Haber’s dangerous game, where the fate of humanity grows more imperiled with every waking hour. It owns and if any lurkers in this thread want to get in on why so many are in mourning over Le Guin's death, this is a good starting point that's also a quick and engaging read
