Duel of the Fates is a great scene in film history if only because it’s like the only time Liam Neeson has ever died on camera, right? Or maybe it’s just the only time he gets killed.

Just having watched that movie again recently, the dance contest and date at Jackrabbit Slim’s is a great scene and pretty much Tarantino at his best. The dialogue really pops and does a great job establishing chemistry and tension between the characters, and the dancing itself is just the icing on the cake.

Close, but it's actually the weary "You've got to be loving kidding" response to noticing the head spider. Made even better by the guy who says this being revealed as one of the Things 15 minutes later.

hell yeah man. one scene, one shot, perfection. Hoffman is soooo good in this movie.

What are some other roles where Hoffman isn't the leading man? He really nails the balancing act between abject depression and joyful stray dog freedom that real grimy motherfuckers have

No.

While compositionally beautiful, the action being depicted is morally vulgar bordering on sociopathic. Far from "best movie scene"

I can see that they were maybe going for that in the script, but the movie just seemed to constantly glorify the murder of the poor. Like, if you watch that scene out of context (i.e. ITT), all it tells me is that this woman's death is sick nasty bro, like seriously freaking epic. It's like the scene in 300 where he kicks the guy down the stairs "This is Sparta!" LOL, when it should be more like the scene in The Empire Strikes Back, when Luke is forced to jump to his death rather than join Vader. I guess what I'm saying, is that this supposed "hero" (Mama?) has no agency in this scene and is portrayed as gorgeous 4K killing fodder.

E: other movies that did that scene better:
Harrison Ford jumping out the dam in The Fugitive
Leeloo jumping off the building away from the cops in The Fifth Element

The point is that Dredd executing Mama by throwing her off a balcony after giving her a hit of slowmo is exactly the same as Mama executing people by giving them a hit of slowmo and then throwing them off a balcony. She has no agency because Dredd took away her agency, just like how she did to her competition. Dredd and Mama are both equally bad.

It's not that hard to figure out.

Buglord
Dredd is a movie where faceless, near-identical cops murder extremely individualized gang members with headshots and other methods that gently caress up their faces (it is symbolism). There's a reason why Anderson doesn't wear her helmet the end of the film and why Mama's death heavily emphasizes her landing face first. Mama committing suicide would completely undercut the entire rest of the film.

This was early 90s daniels too so keep that in mind. Overall Gettysburg is a great movie, just the whole picketts march being on the actual real battlefield and being done in one take is impressive as hell. All the extras were also just reinactors too.
