Oh hey, so this has a thread now.

Not gonna lie, I dusted off the plastic bin where I keep all my camping stuff, and took inventory.

I ordered a replacement sternum strap for my ruck, and I'm probably going to go camping next weekend. I even have books to read! =3

At that price, I am more than willing to build my own. Four sheet metal panels, with slots cut in them to make a self-standing trough. Something like this

but smaller, and with 1mm gauge steel.

caveat: I am a machinist.

I would note that there appears to be different sizes, though. That other one is 365 mm × 206 mm × 290 mm (14.3in x 8.1in x 11.4in)

This one: https://www.amazon.co.jp/SHO-0004S-.../dp/B00KKQASKQ/

is about half the price at 215mm × 122mm × 165mm (8.5in x 4.8in x 6.5in) seems a lot more reasonable.

I'm actually just kind of marvelling at the brand's page, though. https://www.amazon.co.jp/s/ref=sr_n...rnid=2321255051

Suuuuuper boutique is right. I'm looking at their youtube page linked from their website, and they have entire wood stoves with smokestacks coming out the top of their tents. Like, the kind of stuff I'd expect to see in an L.L. Bean catalog. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMD_boi3HF8

Esbits have this problem where they leave a gummy residue on the bottom of your pots.

If you need kindling THAT badly, cotton balls, each with one half dipped into petroleum jelly and stored in a film canister does the job, and is more versatile.

I am not doing one this time! That is just a bundle of firewood set on end.

It was loving 80 degrees out here earlier today, which means that any fire I do build will be short-lifed and in the firepit anyways.

If I were to assemble a Swedish fire torch, I have a wire coat hangar I use for tying split logs together.

After-action report:

I had forgotten what the sounds were like. All night, there was this gentle wash of the wind blowing through the trees, like rain, or a gentle surf. I got a recording, but it's marred by little pops of bits of trees falling off and landing on my tent. I also wish I'd gotten a better photo of how they all lean in one direction, from the wind, but my little exploratory walk turned into a much longer and harder hike than I anticipated it to be, and I kind of just forgot about taking photos at that point. Still too much light pollution to see much of any kind of stars, though.

Don't be a doof like I was, kids, bring water. Also, wind blows over canyons, so it *really* got warm down by the lake.

That little zig-zag trail I took back because I saw that it was getting close to check-out? friggin 45 degrees with minimal switchbacks, that then levelled off into closer to 15.

Since they spent half the time also being a cooking anime (not that I minded in the least), what's everyone's recommendations for that genre?

Ristorante Paradiso, Italian silver foxes on parade, the anime. Also, food. I am not a fan of the manga's artstyle. https://mangadex.org/manga/9484/ristorante-paradiso
Maiko-san Chi no Makanai, one girl became a Maiko, the other one flunked out, but took over cooking duties. No anime, but I wanted to fit it in here. https://mangadex.org/manga/21443/maiko-san-chi-no-makanai-san
Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san is loving dangerous poo poo, I somehow find myself getting ramen immediately after watching an episode. Its run just finished airing and can be watch in its entirety on Crunchyroll. https://mangadex.org/manga/13805/ramen-daisuki-koizumi-san

Not gonna lie, it *is* pretty good bundle. If I didn't already have everything, acquired in piecemeal by scouring clearances and holiday sales everywhere, I'd be tempted to jump on it. Just about the only thing that I notice it *doesn't* have is a ground sheet, so you'll either want to pick that up, or use a tarp.

Cheaper than the 45,000 JPY sleeping bag by less than half, too. =P

(sign up for an REI membership, and you can get it for $199, as opposed to the listed $275 until the 29th of this month.)
