I remember when Barkley was another "Great British Hope" a few years ago but he went anonymous shortly after. Did the hype get to him or did he get hit by injuries?

Barkley's career trajectory has been a peaks and troughs affair, ending ultimately in a downward spiral of continued injuries and never hitting any sort of solid form when he was actually fit.

Tough to believe Barkley's only 24 given how long ago it feels since he was an up-and-coming prospect. But even at an age where he theoretically could still turn great I suppose, his spotty medical history added on top just makes it seem even less likely to me. Is Ross Barkley really the kind of player Chelsea want to stock up on? At least Drinkwater is reliably fit and was a ready-made partner for Kante when they bought him.

Maybe my memory is wonky, but didn't Koeman throw Barkley under the bus during press interviews a couple of times too ? If your manager is happy to use you as a scapegoat, it's going to make any player's time at a club pretty miserable.

When I've seen him, I thought he had enough potential to be a good squad player for Chelsea.

Yeah, he's always had "potential" though and Koeman isn't the only manager to seem dissatisfied with him, I vaguely recall Martinez having frustrations with him too. He's 24 now and still only has "potential".

I'm pretty sure Koeman wanted him to sign a new contract and he refused so Koeman got the hump.

Then there was all that stuff last summer with Barkley saying Conte had his phone off so he refused to complete the deal.

I think he might just be really stupid.

Barkley is a rather underwhelming signing but there's still a chance he lives up to his potential. And if he doesn't Chelsea can sell him to West Ham for £30m.

Also it will be nice for Chelsea to have enough home grown players that they can sign a foreign player without having to sell one, or let Cahill go when his contract is up.

I still want a big name attacker and box to box midfielder to be signed but that will probably have to wait until the summer.

He and Mascherano probably got enough money from that incredibly shady and probably illegal deal that sent them to West Ham a decade ago.

I'm sure Tevez did ok at United, City, and Juve too.
