entertainment companies promote the idea that people can watch movies over and over and be entertaineed by them every time, but that really makes no sense with any movie that has substance, it's more appropriate to the jackass / adam sandler / marvel universe set

The work that was put into this movie is laughable because CGI can accomplish the same stop motion effect nowadays perfectly; even looking just like homemade materials.

Now don’t get all huffy about how it should be praised because of the effort that was put into it. Art should be appreciated for its result, not the suffering that was experienced by its creator.

As for the story, well it’s a children’s story with some silly gags thrown in here and there. Nothing profound.

i'm not saying peopel can never watch great movies again, just that they can't do it like once a year, every year. u have to give yourself time to forget and experience it a different way. also seeing a movie on a small screen is different from seeing it in a theater

contrast with hollywood cheese that just aims to tickle you in predictable ways and make you chuckle with yoru bros, not to understand anything about the world, you're not losing anything by watching it often

It would seem so, but in reality the entertainment industry focuses mainly on the general population and what they can comprehend to be entertaining to make the most bang for the buck. If they concentrated on the small percentage like me, they wouldn’t make much money now, would they?

Independent movies sometimes stray outside what is considered the norm, but even those movies don’t tap into what is intellectually required to be interesting to me because those filmmakers don’t have the right mind for it anyway. If they did, they’d probably make more intelligent life decisions to actually support themselves instead of risking their sanity to make a career out of movie making.

Another option is reading books because films need to make money to be good because they cost so much to tell a good story, what with travel and good actors and equipment, or they're exhaustingly niche indie films with tons of constraints, but with books you don't have to get actors or travel so you don't have to cast a wide net and get your story bastardized by investment-minded studio execs just to make it happen, hence more stories can be told with more depth because the reader's own brain is bringing all the actors, scenery, and special effects. Plus things like magical realism are hard to do well on screen

OP i recommend reading some film theory. that field is full of good general observations about how film works. You will find new ways to appreciate almost any movies you watch. It sounds like you are also put off by the scale of undertaking of even a modest narrative feature film, which I can relate to. I'd recommend exploring avant-garde films, which are mostly very quaint, yet explore ideas that conventional commercial films (even independent and/or foreign films) rarely approach.

One of the people I saw it with was a Lynch fanboy and he said afterwards that it was basically a companion piece to Mullholland Drive. I think it was more like the afterbirth, but semantics.

That movie was the goddamn worst. When you're doing a parody you've got two options:

1. Commit to your premise and find the jokes therein. Think 'This is Spinal Tap' or 'Life of Brian' minus the alien detour in the middle.

2. Throw structure out the window and just be really really funny. Think 'Holy Grail.'

'What we do in the Shadows' tried for the latter and failed miserably, because he had everyone improv despite none of them being any good at it.

Pootie Tang had only one joke that worked for me but it was a doozy-- when the film opens with a framing device of Pootie showing a clip of his new movie on a talk show, then when the movie ends it cuts back to the talk show and the host says 'Wow that was a really long clip.'
