They did the whole 80's thing before Stranger Things made it popular.

That was seriously good production design... the only thing that would make you know that this isn't an actual early 80's horror movie is if you recognize Dee Wallace at the beginning and know she's too old for it to have been made in that period.

Hairstyles for example are a thing that a lot of period pieces don't really get quite right, and they really nailed it here.

Verhoeven, Coens, or submarines are a pretty safe bet for a great movie.

I never watched this but I saw a clip, the played-straight romantic scene followed by a wry narrator going "A lady who sets her heart upon a lad in uniform must prepare to change lovers pretty quickly or her life will be but a sad one" was dark as hell. People poo poo on the narrator thing, and a lot of the time it is done poorly, but I like that a lot and it did make me want to see the movie.

Perhaps you need to begin with a true classic, sure to awaken at least one emotion in you, Freddy Got Fingered, good sir. If you wash this down with a fine desert of The Garbage Pale Kids movie you will find that enough of your superior brain cells will have melted that you should not be able to enjoy all films much greater than ever before, with a new appreciation for their merits.

If all else fails you can try.. drastic measures. A Transformers movie marathon, repeated for 48 hours. After that all film will be a glorious experience for you.

OP, I feel the subversive climate-change theme of Manos:Hands of Fate has not been sufficiently explored through the lens of genderqueer Marxism. It's yours for the taking.

like are there books that you think are profound and challenging, are there paintings that you appreciate, or is there no art on earth sufficient to sate your gigantically embiggened mind?

Yeah it's a deeply cynical movie about a horrible man and the garbage life he builds for those around him, while nearly every shot is carefully crafted to look like paintings of the era.

Now it's a slow... boring... boring... movie... but if you can bliss out on the visuals you'll have a great time appreciating the craftsmanship.
