This is a continuation of the archived LP thread "The Dreamy Let's Play -- a stellar look at every Kirby game, every weekday".

Hello Dreamers, and welcome (back) to The Dreamy Let's Play! It's been nearly a year since our last update to the Franchise Play, but with the 16th anniversary of our next game, Super Smash Bros. Melee, we felt it was time to bring this series back and take it all the way to the finish.

We're taking on every single game in the Kirby franchise, from Kirby's Dream Land on the Game Boy all the way up to Kirby: Star Allies on the Switch. Along the way, as part of each game's first video, we'll be taking a look at the development process, as well as the turmoil behind the scenes as HAL Laboratory got its sea legs in its early days, and moved on to create bigger and better things like the Super Smash Bros. series later on in life.

Join us! (Gonna be prettying up this post as more games come in, and as time permits. Little bare-bones right now, but it'll grow!)

Yeah, I had this problem with Command Mission, it's a game I'm not as familiar with and I wanted to give my full attention to it, rather than listening to you guys like a podcast, but with it and everything else you guys publish I think I'm still stuck on episode 4 or something?

Well, when Star Allies comes out, we'll more than likely go ahead and jump right in like we did with Planet Robobot (and honestly, I am thrilled that Kirby is getting regular releases again -- it feels like forever since the franchise has been getting not just real platformers, but quality ones with any regularity).

And Command Mission... whew, that was a bit of a bumpy ride. The postgame was interesting, and there were some fun chunks in there, but some parts of it seriously dragged on for just forever. Trying to work on better ways to combat that with long games.

ANYWHO, let's get Ashley in here and get ourselves some Young Link in a totally not creepy way. Also, Part 16 is one of my favorite videos we've produced in recent memory, definitely give that one a go if nothing else.

Now that we've unlocked a bunch more Event Matches, I think it's about time we start clearing out as many of those as we can (and getting ourselves a handful more fighters along the way). For the sake of not making literally hundreds of time-burning episodes, we've been running CPU matches off-camera to get the play time / VS match total / KO total jacked up to help unlock a few things like Mewtwo, but everything else is done in the videos themselves.

So this is kinda weird, we basically have been off-camera just killing ourselves over and over to rack up the VS matches, play time, KOs, etc., so they're easier to come by in recording sessions. What we discovered was a "so dumb it's actually kind of fun" little suicide game, and I decided during editing that it was just naturally funny enough commentary-wise to wrap it up as a standalone episode itself. Yeah, honestly it just doesn't do it for me. I like the original better, in the end, and this sets things up well enough for future titles, but the NES version is just a lot better, in my opinion.

I can 100% understand that, sorry for being pretty overwhelming with it all. Our kind of internal thought process for it is "well people watching Sonic Game XYZ may not be interested in Zelda Game ABC or vice versa", with the hope that people would find a few things they like and follow along with those.

BUT, it can still be a lot for new folks, and it can be a ton if you're not picky with your game preferences, and yeah it is a bit of a heavy load. We've got some ideas for this summer that might lighten the LP load without losing our steam, hopefully that should help a bit.

I can't say for sure, but I would generally be interested in it, perhaps as a D-Pad + Chill riff track sort of dealie as opposed to a more focused Seriesly thing (especially seeing as, as far as I'm aware, the show only has the loosest of running threads, so it wouldn't have many plot points to really follow over the course of the series).

We'll see, there might be a way to get that done down the line. I'm certainly not ready to write it off completely yet.

Why, yes, I do like Kirby games.
I'd love to see you tackle at least a bit of the anime. Quite aside from my obvious bias (see left), I actually have a thanks in one of the fansubbed episodes (I knew the person who was working on them at the time), so I have a slightly softer spot in my heart for it than perhaps it deserves. Some of the episodes are genuinely dark (like the not one but two episodes where Kirby befriends an enemy, only to have said former enemy die defending him), while others are very, very silly. Besides, where else are you going to see this?

If you want to tackle the anime and are worried about copyright stuff, one way to do it is to only upload your commentary track, starting with a countdown, and telling people to get the episodes on their own and start them with the countdown.

I'm not too too worried about it (if any of our content was gonna get yanked, the Michael Jackson video gave Sony Music lots of opportunities), if anything I think we'd do it as a D-Pad + Chill or something similarly-formatted, it usually ends up with the video being 40-50% the original length of the episode and the copyright flags are pretty minimal.

So as we bring Nightmare in Dream Land to a close, I find myself at odds. This isn't a bad game, by any stretch, but at the end of the day this one honestly strikes me as being wildly inferior to Kirby's Adventure. Something about it feels... sloppier, maybe? The level design is completely destroyed by way of larger sprites and fewer tiles per screen, not to mention losing the Butter Building parallax scroll, having Kirby's inhale affect more than what's directly in front of him, and making most minibosses and bosses gargantuan.

I dunno, man.

That's true, the SMA series did a pretty decent job of keeping the spirit of the originals (and even keeping the sprite changes themselves to a minimum) while adding their own touch to the mix (lots of rotation and a little stretching/squashing IIRC). It's kind of interesting just how well the GBA did, it's possible that the mere fact it could approach (or beat) NES/SNES quality was a pretty big selling point, even if critically-speaking they didn't quite hold up.

Near as I can tell, unlike the other recent games where the MacGuffins are required to progress through the worlds, collecting the puzzle pieces in this game just unlocks bonus art to look at and has no bearing on the actual game at all (you're welcome to grab them but it doesn't make much difference if you do), however finding the switches hidden in the stages can unlock extra stages to play. You can also drop abilities just by pressing the " - " button.

Also collecting 100 stars gives you a 1up, not sure why this confuses you since you already encountered it in Robobot and it's been a thing in the series since Dream Land 2.
