I.. uhh, would suggest going back into the game at least to beat the last Extra Planet right now, it unlocks after beating the final boss and is separate from the extra game modes. It's something pretty amazing.

To clarify the weirdly named modes. "Guest Star Allies" is the Metaknightmare mode except you get to pick any single ally to play as (You can still make friends with hearts) and after you beat it once you can play it as the dream friends. Ultimate Choice is the boss rush mode and it of course has a super secret final difficulty above the highest one if you keep pressing UP.

Also when you do get around to fighting void termina again, if all four of you charge up a shot and release it at once you fire a gigantic laser that instantly destroys that specific eye.

<click> <click> What is it with this dancing?! Bouncing around like fools... I would have thought my own kind at least would understand the seriousness of our Adventurer's Guild!

So, why do so many people consider Kirby Air Ride a masterpiece? And why is it so hard for new players to get a handle on? What a question indeed.

The best thing I can do is talk about my own experience with it. Back in the early days of the Gamecube, both me and my friend owned one. But I didn't get many games for it - I had stingy parents that thought video games rotted your brain, so I only got them for birthdays or Christmas. It was at his house that I mostly played Kirby Air Ride. While it was a basely fun experience to start, what really shone was our competitions in the City Trial sub-mode (which really, should be considered the main mode). We would play the game together for afternoons at a time, and I longed for it when I was not at his house. Eventually I managed to borrow the game and play it for myself - completionist that I am, I checked off every box for all three modes after some work, and that really spurred my later tendencies for Kirby games.

But why is it so fun? I say because City Trial in particular is a mode that's unpredictable, and doesn't get old fast. You never know if you'll run into a machine that you know you like - will you take a risk with something new? Will you stay on the reliable but kind of sucky Compact Star? Or will you search for the parts to make the legendary Dragoon and Hydra? What kinds of powerups will you find, and what will you do with them? Stay away from other players, or hunt them down to steal their powerups by destroying their machines? How strong can you really make your machine? And will it even be useful in the final game after all? All these and more are the key reasons why City Trial is so unpredictable and why it's so much fun for me to go back to even to this day.

Now, in regards to the somewhat unorthodox control scheme, I'd say that it's simple because it's Kirby. Kirby's always been about the simplicity, and it really doesn't need you to know much in order to race its tracks or explore its map. Bumping off of walls, going onto rougher terrain, screwing up charge boosts, they don't hurt you all that much compared to something like Mario Kart. Sure, it could be a little more robust, but it doesn't really need to be. You say, why did they make it only the A Button? I say, why not?

The key to playing effectively know is to know exactly what A does. And what it does, simply, is make you touch the ground. All machines (except for wheelies) float slightly above the ground, and pressing A makes them touch down, which is what "braking" is. Holding A for long enough will charge up a boost, and when you release you get a little boost of speed. So basically, you want to treat those boosts the same way you would power sliding in Mario Kart - hold it as you approach a tight turn, and release it once you pass the threshold. Pressing A will also activate switches below you - since, of course, you aren't TOUCHING them (unless, again, you're on a wheelie). It also swallows enemies nearby, but the button is very responsive. All you need is the slightest tap, and you won't even slow down while you're doing that. This is also important to realize when gliding. Since pressing A makes you touch the ground, pressing it while in the air will make you soar straight downwards. Incredibly quickly. It can be an effective strategy, but it's also easy to just press it by accident, which I believe has happened once or twice.

I suppose, since people expect racing games to be in a standardized format in 2018, that's why it's a bit hard for newer players to get a handle on Air Ride's experimental nature. But that's okay. All it really takes is more practice, and you'll eventually get the hang of the little intricacies. And I really, really recommend you play more City Trial. You have the rare opportunity to play it with humans, something that is unfortunately very hard for me to do nowadays. I have so many good memories of it, and I want you to all look back on this game fondly as well. It's not perfect, but it's a solid experience that I don't think should be considered a roadbump in Kirby's sidegame adventures.

(sorry for the essay)

EDIT: Oh yeah and the music is fantastic, just throwing it out there.

BTW about BN5:

-Dark Chips are necessary for 100% completion so make to get them when you can. You should also stick them in your folder once you can use ChaosSoulUnison (especially for DarkInvisible). They also have really great descriptions (DarkRecover is "BECOME ALMOST INVINCIBLE") to replace BN4's DARK CHIP CREATED BY DESIRE.
-SuperVulcan S is hilariously broken and goes great with S codes. It also goes great with ChaosNumberSoul :unsmigghh:
-Don't use quake or throwing chips period. They're waaaaay too slow
-Blinder is actually very useful! It actually affects viruses and bosses! And it comes in * code.
-I really like the AirSpin chip series but it's an acquired taste.
-Get AreaGrabs, preferably in * code but S code will suffice. You need them now even more than before for Liberation missions. Especially for CloudMan.

This is probably my actual favorite Kirby game so here's some tips that I remember if you want to spoil yourself:

Doors can have either a small or large star. The latter are guaranteed to be 2-way doors, so you can come back where you came from. The switch palaces unlock 2-way doors back to the hub in Rainbow Route as you saw.
The map treasure you got in area 2 is a thing for each "world" including world 1. Most worlds have it obnoxiously hidden instead of handing it to you like world 2 did. It lets you view the nice high-resolution map that shows the paths between rooms.
Gray star blocks can be sucked towards you as seen in the tutorial. There's also a larger variant that makes good use of the friends feature... assuming you can make their AI cooperate.
Those little statues of the "pineapple" are copy pedestals like in Super Star, but they don't overwrite your ability if you already have one.

Can't think of anything else at the moment, but I'm sure the comments section will be quick to point out anything you miss lol. Was really fun to see you guys react to the new enemies; a lot of them will return in Squeak Squad, another awesome Flagship game. Exciting stuff!

Yeah, after a while I realized the pedestals were only giving me an ability when I had none, which was a bit of an unexpected shift from Super Star (and Star Allies having switched it back), and didn't notice that detail on the two-way doors, duly noted!

I can't wait for Squeak Squad because it's an amazing game.

Also you're LPing ZX and ZXA. It's like Good game christmas in July :allears:

YEUP! We got pretty lucky with the timing (aside from there being like... seven live videos in four days), now we've got two solid Metroidvania-style games on the docket, should be rad!

So, Trip report/reference for when you guys get back around to star allies

Ribbon:Has access to "paint" element, and can provide frost and lightning through her boss summons of Krako and that blue dinosaur dude from DL3. Otherwise is fairly underwhelming.
Dark Metaknight:Metaknight+++++++++ Utterly broken, can accept all the elements that sword can, also has street fighter style inputs to do even more broken poo poo
Daroach:Can provide ice, lightning, and fire. Can also do cut and hammer through his summons. Is very very fun to play.

edit: and I've got a good news/bad news out of Ben's nightmares for you.
Good News:Dark Metaknight's Guest Star Allies run has multiple sections that are giant Metroidvania style puzzles and more direct references to Amazing Mirror, progress down this leg to get wind, go someplace else to use wind, explore around to find a switch, etc.
Bad News:If you want to fill out the audience in guest star allies now you need to beat it with literally every, single, ally. You know, 33 times.

Does it really need saying?
Hahahahaha, okay Dark MK's situation in Star Allies sounds kind of hilarious. We'll have to see how we're going to handle GSA when we get back around to it, we'll definitely do it at least a bit but I'm not sure we're gonna pull off 33 times.

As for The Amazing Mirror itself, I'm not going to include which levels we're in per episode because... well, we're jumping levels constantly, and it'll probably be Rainbow Route and Moonlight Mansion for almost every single episode anyway. That said, let's begin!
