Better get used to those shrieks, they're definitely a staple from here on out Anyhow, it's FINALLY TIME FOR A NOT-WEIRDASS game. The audio is still busted for the first few episodes, but thankfully it goes by smooth and I was pretty careful to do the best I could with keeping the added-back BGM as close as possible. Either way, this is Kirby: Squeak Squad! And thankfully, this is the end of the manually-added BGM, HOORAYYY. We're swinging on through Nature Notch and hoping we don't run into any of those pesky mole people... Carbon dioxide posted:I like that none of these levels are so long that it's annoying to redo them if you missed anything. God almighty, you're telling me! What a breath of fresh air. Canvas Curse was crazy obnoxious about needing to spend 5-10 minutes to get through a single level just to get one missed badge, in Squeak Squad a handful of the levels are barely a minute long if you truck through them. I'd rather a Kirby game with more shortish levels than fewer, marathon levels. And hey, our BGM is back! So this is where the game starts to reveal its true colors. Who should turn up but our two "favorite" midbosses from Amazing Mirror, Boxy and Box Boxer? Real convenient that their names are so drat similar with them being so goddamn annoying. It's okay though, Buboo is absolutely adorable. So... okay, Squeak Squad, for all its general well-constructedness, seems to have a serious pacing problem. Some stages just seem to go on forever. Another big trend with Kirby games over time is the (fairly akin to Sonic) reveal that there's actually a bigger bad guy behind it all. It even started way back with Kirby's second outing, Kirby's Adventure (and in turn its remake Nightmare in Dream Land), where King Dedede is actually trying to prevent disaster by keeping Kirby from unlocking the seal on some far greater evil. That's sounding a little familiar here... Speaking of recycled things! Meta Knight's fight here is about 95% ripped straight out of Nightmare in Dream Land, with the added difference of the BGM being Dedede's Theme (for no discernible reason) and the addition of Elemental Sword techniques in honor of the trend starting with this game. And then of course, the big reveal about the true nature of the bad guy... is this just Nightmare in Dream Land 2? So in a lovely bit of synchronicity, we find ourselves coming up on the next Super Smash Bros. game in this Franchise Play, and not only that but in fact the game that includes what appears to be the precursor to the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's story mode: World of Light. So to get everyone caught up in time for the big release, we are putting out three episodes a day in a grueling crunch to get through it in time. It's time for the one part of Brawl everyone can agree upon as a great addition to the franchise: The Subspace Emissary Part 1: "Remember, I Have No Idea" | Midair Stadium, Mario vs. Kirby, vs. Petey Piranha, Skyworld https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lvFJy8i8Uk Part 2: "Who's Donkey Kong Now?" | Sea of Clouds, The Jungle, The Plain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6Rb-W1T1jE Part 3: "I Hate Other Things That Can Fly" | The Lake, vs. Rayquaza, vs. Dark Bowser https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7hH7Jukf2c ricdesi fucked around with this message at 08:40 on Dec 7, 2018 |

Mild spoiler 1: We did end up going co-op at the mid-point of the adventure. Mild spoiler 2: It almost immediately slowed our progress down, for reasons you'll be seeing soon. You actually need to be more conservative with lives if you're playing co-op, especially against boss characters, but we'll be encountering that over the next couple days. Don't worry about doing all spirits first time you encounter them. Also using the Y button in the party menu to auto select useful spirits is helpful.

The multi-enemy fights are extremely frustrating because the normal mode AI is an absolute bastard. I think they're supposed to be balanced around you having easy access to other spirits and the abilities you buy with Skill Points but both of those are steep mountains to scale. The best pro-strat is to try to get 3 star Attack-Grapple-Shield multi-slot spirits ASAP (4 star would be ideal, but good loving luck with THOSE fights) and then use those. I frankly don't like the spirit system, it's way too grindy-y and makes you jump through too many hoops. EDIT: I guess you can switch to Easy and grab a few 4 stars but I never tried it because that is weakness Seraphic Neoman fucked around with this message at 05:00 on Dec 16, 2018 |

We definitely have a couple of solid Attack and Grapple primaries, but weirdly we're still struggling to get a high-tier Shield primary squared away, which is causing us some... rather specific grief. We're sticking with Normal difficulty throughout, and I've definitely noticed that the AI in this game is decidedly higher than past Smash games, so those team battles are a definite shitstorm of finger-crossing.
