Vanderdeath posted:My childhood friend read A Game of Thrones when we were in middle school and we're both 34 now. He really, really should've ended the novels with the Red Wedding, especially considering how he recently talked about how ASoIaF was originally going to be a short story. IRQ posted:He's said in interviews before that he doesn't plan out anything he writes because he views it like gardening or something. Basically there are no notes to be destroyed, he just says stuff like that because people are mean to him for being a liar with no work ethic (I say as I post from work). Huh? What? He talks about this on his blog, all the time... The books had the same end-point as now when it was planned as a trilogy, he just planned to time-skip a lot. He's also made extensive notes and plotted the narratives and much of the dialogue for the 9, main POV characters, so the books will be (basically are) finished: he just has to write them. I completely understand why he doesn't finish: 1) it's a cash cow-ride that ends when the series is over and 2) would you really want to be working on the same art project for 25+ years? zoux posted:

Looten Plunder posted:So catch me up a bit on The Last Kingdom. Wondering if it's worth diving in to 3 seasons of another show when I've got so much on the backburner anyway. It's like c2005 Ridley Scott made a tv show. Production values are on-par/better than the shows you mentioned with more of a bent towards historical accuracy than Vikings, for instance. The historical setting is a generation or so after the events of Vikings, so you should be able to dive right in, if you are already familiar with the other show. Honestly, Last Kingdom is one of the most film-like tv shows I've ever seen: the way they handle the character progressions and the passage of time feels more like a movie experience than the pace of a tv show. Looten Plunder posted:Just comparing the Last Kingdom/Vikings character crossover. From what I can see there is Ragnar, Ubba, Sigurd and Rollo from the Vikings side of things and Alfred, Æthelred and most of the Ecbert/Aethelwulf Wessex crew (but without actual Ecbert/Aetherwulf). Lots of shared names, but TLK starts ~100 years after Vikings. Vikings is c790, Last Kingdom takes place c.880. Ragnar is the Viking version of "Steve."

Mu Zeta posted:I know the years are off but Alfred has to be the same character in both shows. Alfred the Great is from the historical period that Last Kingdom is set in. The king from Vikings was based on Ecgberht of Wessex, Alfred's grandfather, from about a century earlier.

I watched some of Seth's stuff at the very beginning but dropped off. Conan was the only one I continued to watch. I'm pretty interested in his new show format starting at the beginning of the year and his podcast, thought only two episodes in, is really good. I miss Craig Ferguson. For me, his late night show was the perfect blend of stupidity while also sticking its thumb in the format's eye.

The Death Note adaptation was hilarious bad. There's no way a live-action Bebop is anything other than poo poo: the best they could hope for is to recreate the original and that has been shown over and over to be a pointless endeavor.
