I gravitated towards the Greens, eventually even joining the party itself.

The Linke is a party I grudgingly accept exists, but I've learned enough about DDR-history I can't bring myself to trust a party that was once the SED, a party leading the corrupt state apparatus ...

gently caress it, RL keeps punching me in my stupid face but I can either write more or just resign myself to slowly being ground down by the mills of capitalism. I'll :toxx: for 8k this month and I'll either write this amount or die trying*

*If I stop posting on these forums after December 31, feel free to assume after a full month of no new posts, that I indeed have died and permaban me on February 1

OK, I made it. Actually, I was already safely over the 8k-threshold a week ago, but I kept adding and revising the text I wrote.

Also, the short story I started mutated into a giant essay about writing. I'm still not sure if it was fate or bad luck that I stumbled over an old essay I'd started last year hiding among my work files just 500 words into the story I wanted to write.

Well, at least I guess I finished this thing, for all that's worth!

Some stats:

Word count Before December (BD): 6044 (written in 2021, then left to rot)

Word count December 31: 17477

Words added in December 2022: 11433

For some reason I got really inspired to finish this weird collection of math formulas, writing tips and insane background stories for ship-classes. Since this is now safely behind me, I guess next month I'll try to work on my old novel, forever caught in endless revision hell for the last couple years. (It's written in German though, so I can't pledge for January, as I'm mostly editing and revising poo poo, not actually writing new material like with this hideous mutation.) (Also the whole foreign language thing, I guess.)

Oh, before I forget, the entire thing is now online here, on my Blog.

Edit:

By the way, I couldn't resist adding and rewriting even more poo poo when I transplanted my essay from Libre Office to my Blog, so the word count is actually a bit lower then the total thing.

Now I'm kind of glad I didn't pledge for January, that month was bad.

But seeing as I have a clear run through February, I'll pledge 4k words for February. Among other things, my publisher started a new competition for tiny short stories this month, and I want to try to get an entry in.

Hmm, give me another 700 in the next 48 hours, seems reasonable.

OK, done. But it turned out to be around 3000 words instead, because I'm an idiot and only noticed when starting writing again yesterday that the document I had worked on before getting hospitalized had a large chunk of extra text in it. (I have the habit of sometimes opening an old text and deleting the old text before saving it as a template for my new text, since I keep tinkering and changing things in the background during writing and get annoyed when I inevitably find out my empty template files are all seriously out of date now. The drawback is, of course, sometimes I forget to just delete the entire text and then later, I'll re-read what I wrote and notice the completely unrelated older text starting a page after the new text ends.)

But luckily, I had a sudden strike of inspiration while doing groceries today and after finishing the original text and still being 2k words short, I just started writing a new short story instead of giving up. So now I'm at roughly 4,2k words.

And now I hope this works, since this time I'm trying out mucking around with Google documents:

This link should make it possible to read the first text

It's a short "story" in the format of a scientific data base entry about an alien parasite. It was originally supposed to be the background for a short story I wanted to write for my publisher's yearly short story competition, but alas, I managed to put myself into hospital during the two days I wanted to write it, so for now this story based on a weird dream I had last month only exists in this form. It's written in German, as this entire thing was done for a German publisher. (The "two day" thing is less insane than it sounds, this competition has some serious restrictions, the last one I send something in for demanded ca. 400 words, max.)

And this link should give you the first draft of a new fantasy story based on stuff I basically just came up with on the spot today to fill up words. It was loosely inspired by playing an Enchanter in Conquest of Elysium 5 and thinking about how this kind of magic could work in a more down-to-earth fantasy setting.

Well, anyway. Lessons have been learned. Next time I'll avoid pledging for words in the same month as surgery. And to be extra sure, I'll await my doctor's word on how my eye is proceeding after this week's disaster before pledging for March.

gently caress, it's nearly 3 am now. I am tired.

Well gently caress, I somehow managed to write 2700+ words on a single day, and I still can't bring myself to stop. My finger tips are bright red, which I take as a bad sign.

But hell, I'm still inspired and apparently my manic depression entered the manic phase or whatever is wrong with me

Protip: Don't listen to your favorite music, especially not if it's Magnum, while writing. I got really weirdly inspired and I'm now scared I lose this spark when I stop to sleep.

Anyway, from tomorrow on I'll probably crash and burn thanks to today, so here's my toxx for the month:

So, last day of the month. Did I make my 9k?

Well, turns out if your supervisor at work keeps leaving early, you can get a lot of stuff done!

I managed to get over 13k done in September! Across multiple different projects, so the progress in each of them is comparatively tiny! But still, 13k words. drat. I could probably have managed another couple thousand today, but I got a cold and decided to stop here.

I didn't even count everything, but my cold is giving me a headache and so I stopped searching for the other crap I wrote this month, and called it a day when I saw the word ticker go above 13k.

To confirm what I have done, I threw everything I worked on into a single file that is now linked here.

But since there's a lot of poo poo in there that's not exactly ready for publishing, I'll delete this trash can file at some point next week. I'm guessing that's time enough to confirm that I didn't just chatGPT'd my way through this.

Welp, OK it's done. Again, I managed to waffle between multiple projects. At least the absolute final update for one of my long-running Let's Plays is almost finished, so I have some actual progress besides just tons and tons of words.

The other projects are a bit more dear to me, so I haven't included them here in my proof.

The total I got for October was something like 14-15k words in total, with this insane thing I've linked taking up 13k+ of my output. (What annoys me the most is that I'm still not finished, though I have high hopes for November)

And now I need to have a lie down before deciding how much I want to pledge next month. Probably a bit less, just so I'm not stressing myself out so much.

OK, end of November.

I was freakishly busy with non-writing poo poo (well, except for my work, which also involves writing, but my boss would not appreciate me handing out company texts I've worked on, so that doesn't count since I can't show you), but me finally and doggedly hunting down the end of my Master of Orion 3 Let's Play meant I still made it across the finishing line.

First post that I wrote 100% in November; 2378 words according to my word editor

Second post I finished this month, 2586 words

And then I worked on this poo poo this month:

6740 words typed up for a potential spaceship combat system that may or may not be finished one day

This poo poo started originally as an attempt to make something that's easy to implement in a strategy game and still simple enough to be used in a tabletop-game, but it is fast approaching Aurora-level complexity. Welp, anyway, that's my 10k for November done!

And to make sure my goddman eternal LP is loving finished this year, I pledge another 10k for Decemer, just to keep the momentum going.

Bad news: I need another 10k pledge for January, to keep the momentum going.

Welp, here's the poo poo I wrote for my LP:

2362 words

3374 words

2950 words

And then I worked on this for a while (a glossary to help keep me from loving up for one of my other projects):

3022 words

10k for December 23: Achieved!

Welp, again barely made it. I really should stop doing most of the work at the very end of the month.

First, I ended my long-running Master of Orion 3 LP this month:

MO3 156: The Age of Rebellion VI: The Undiscovered Sector
MO3 157: The Age of Rebellion VII: Orion Generations
MO3 158: The Age of Rebellion VIII: Orion Contacts

However, three final update came up a bit short, according to my text editor it's at most 8198 words.

So I sat back down this evening and went back to an older project I keep tinkering around with, and collected and reordered some old fragments and other electronic paperwork to turn it into a proper writing project. Then started writing again. The reorganizing turned my old files into a text 5447 words long, which sadly doesn't cound because while organizing files certainly is work, it's not writing. So I kept writing until I stopped after a good stopping point to catch my breath. The new text is now 7436 words long. In other words, the total tally for this month was 8198 + 1989 = 10187 words.

10187 words for January 2024

OK, in hopes I pace myself better and because I still have a huge backlog of old projects to get running again and new poo poo to start, I pledge again 10k for February. May I survive my hubris.

This link goes to a document I filled up with a mad treatise about making a good space 4x game. Next month I'll probably go back and finish it, I dunno. I mostly wrote this so my thoughts wouldn't drive me insane.

7k words, give or take a couple dozen.

This link however, goes to an update I wrote for my Operation Eastside screenshot LP. About 3,2k words.

Again, I planned my time so badly I was forced to write 6k words in just under three days, but also again, I made it!

And this time I managed to concentrate on extending and reworking existing poo poo, instead of my old curse of just constantly starting new stuff.

1. Fantasy. Started as just a short story, but then exploded into an entire setting. I'll keep working on this to see where it goes. Current stat is ca. 8064 words, 2412 words written this month.

2. Science Fiction. I keep working on this since forever. One of my oldest projects, and I also keep rewriting things because I have a real problem with changing my mind constantly. In March, this text blew up into 15033 words. Of which, 7795 words were written in this single month alone.

This makes the total for March 2024: 10207 words.

Man, this was far too close. I'm also running into the problem how to count editing my backlog of finished older stuff. Obviously, just counting words would give me bizarre cases where e.g. a 10k word text turns into an 8k text after extensive rework, and then I'd have written -2k words, which makes no sense. But keeping a proper tally of how many words I keep deleting/writing new seems like a lot of extra work.

Just declaring the entirety of the changed text to be the new word count sounds unethical to me, too. So I guess for April, I'll go with a compromise: I'll pledge 8000 words, to give myself a little buffer in which I can edit things.

Hopefully, this works out!

One of these days, I will manage to actually post on a day that's not literally the last day of the month, ugh.

Anyway, most of what I did in April was related to my Operation: Eastside Let's Play, so let's look at the final count:

The penultimate update was, according to my text editor, 3860 words.

The last main run update ended up clocking in at 4732 words.

There was also this mess. 7019 words, a lore update for the same thread. I only count maybe 2k of those, since most of it was already written, I just revised, edited and added stuff. The original word count I remember from last time was something like 3-4k, and I'm playing it safe and rounding down heavily.

3,8k
4,7k
2k

Approximately 10,5k words. Huh. Looks like working so much on that dumb treatise about space doors would have been enough to even pull me through a 10k-word goal.

gently caress it, too late. Also I'm playing it safe again: 8000 words for May, go!
