Guys, daesh has no surviving major bases and Assad has effectively won the Syrian civil war. The only potentially worthwhile goal remaining is to guarantee the independence of the Kurds, and I don't think that was ever on the table even for Obama/Clinton. The Syria withdrawal isn't a bad thing. Don't cheerlead interventionism.

I don't care what Obama or Clinton would have done, saying "welp, we're done here" and bailing on loyal allies to let the Turks go all Armenia on their asses is bad. Doesn't matter if we should have been there in the first place, we are now and that obliges us to protect people who have risked a lot to help us.

Plus, I agree we don't need to be in Syria, but I'd rather the decision not come about because the President basically threw up his hands and said "gently caress it, it's all yours" while on a phone call with his Turkish dictator buddy, and then announced immediate withdrawal via tweet without actually consulting anyone in the military and/or State Department.

You're missing the bit where Rall says the Kurds are "strategic partners in killing Muslims" I think. And again, the bombing raids are done by aircraft; aircraft that are not based in Syria. Removing troops from Rojava has no effect on the USAF nor on the air wings of the Navy and Marines. Trump didn't say he'd stop air strikes.

In health care, for example, maternal deaths inched up slightly this year to 20.7 per 100,000 live births, according to data from the United Health Foundation. Only introducing Medicare4All is insufficient to fill the hole that is the US Healthcare industry, in addition the state will need to expropriate big pharma, produce cures that have been deemed unprofitable and produce generic drugs. A surprisingly radical cartoon.

I was told a long time ago that whaling is a good way for right-wingers in Japan to thumb their nose at the West without making any governments actually very angry. I wonder if it will stay that way?

Samurai Sanders posted:I was told a long time ago that whaling is a good way for right-wingers in Japan to thumb their nose at the West without making any governments actually very angry. I wonder if it will stay that way? Yes, whaling is something that survives in Japan only through cronyism; it isn't commercially viable and whalers would go bankrupt without subsidies. The Japanese government spends every year the equivalent of several hundred million dollars to prop up whalers; plus the expense of sending the Japanese navy to escort the ships. The upside is that now Japan will only be allowed to hunt whales in its own waters (including EEZ). While they were abusing the "scientific research" loophole, they could hunt whales in international waters too. The Sea Shepherd, who are fiercely against whaling, thought that this was an overall positive change for this reason: https://seashepherd.org/2018/12/21/japan-may-quit-the-iwc-and-to-return-to-commercial-whaling/ quote:5. Japan will not be able to kill whales in the Southern Ocean. It is an internationally established whale sanctuary and the only reason Japan has been able to flaunt the law is by invoking the excuse of ‘scientific research whaling.” Overt commercial whaling is strictly prohibited in the Southern Ocean and Japan has indicated it will quit the Southern Ocean while expanding whaling in the North Pacific. This would mean that the current whaling season in Antarctic waters will be the last.

yea the only reason whale meat is a thing is A) idiots buying it for ~the taboo~ or B) super olds who remember it from their childhood during the post war era. There's no market for whale as some kinda super cool and tasty meat chefs and aficionados are clamoring for.
