A friend of mine just asked about "Boostle" the time traveling DC superhero who tried to save his superhero boyfriend's life but couldn't.

I prefer this interpretation of events to the real thing, up to and including changing Booster Gold's name to Boostle.

It's one of their criteria for ranking two books against each other. If one of them, hypothetically, was walking out the door to go eat a hamburger sandwich and saw two books on the shelf, which one would they be more likely to pick up to read while they ate lunch. This is the criterion by which they justify ranking Age of the Sentry over Art Spiegelman's Maus.

That makes me want to fight them.

Is Achewood: The Great Outdoor Fight really good enough to be number six on that list? That seems kind of odd to me.

Probably, yeah.

I think it's mostly pushback, people are rabidly for it because a lot of other people are rabidly against it and need to make that known everytime it's mentioned.

No I think I and a few other people genuinely feel a strong connection to the work, to the point that the way we express ourselves is shaped by the idiosyncratic nature of the dialogue. The comic lost its magic pretty hard a long time ago and the creator turned out to be a liar fuckup thief hack, but that doesn't really erase how unique and interesting the comic was in its prime.

It's definitely not for everyone, though. It's like a weird indie band or something.

I've read plenty of manga that has confusing-rear end panel layouts.

Most comics follow basic readability principles that are taught in art class and "Understanding Comics" and other things like that. It's only when people decide to get "experimental" or are self taught incompetent boobs that problems occur.

See, that second page is confusing to me because it's unclear if I have to read all 3 of the panels on the right before moving to the big one to the left or not.

Why are there so many YouTube channels where people just narrate the stories of comic books? I can't tell if it's a commentary on human laziness or a sign that comic books are just that loving hard to get into.

Samuringa posted:

"writing the words" is creating the world, plot, setting, and all that

He's specifically referring to how Stan would sometimes (but not always) just add dialogue after an artist did everything else. This isn't the traditional "Marvel method", which involved the writer doing a plot outline and letting the artist adapt it how he felt was best, then adding dialogue. Stan himself points out that he did very little on the later issues of Spider-man that Ditko worked on, for example.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4z7xuDhMeg&t=124s

The Marvel Method gave artists more creative freedom than was traditional at the time, and allowed a relatively small team at early Marvel to put out a ton of books. It should also be pointed out that Jack Kirby and Stan Lee had often worked for companies that gave neither writer or artist credit for their work, and that Jack often wrote and drew comics that the publisher took all the credit (and sometimes money) for.

There's a lot to criticize Stan Lee for, but pretending the artists did "EVERYTHING" and that he just "put words in" in every case is not just ungenerous, it's a flat-out lie.
