In four years I’ll hopefully be working remote from somewhere in the mountains that still has a decent internet connection. Maybe somewhere cheapish., it would be cool to be able to just sock away big city money living up in the CO / WY mountains.

So the 4 series is getting hit hard according to early reports? Fuuuuuuuck, I just gave my wife my old Haswell desktop. She is going to be pissed when it suddenly slows down a ton. I guess it’s still time to just sit and wait and see how bad it is.

A ticket came in: I was trying to log into this other person’s account and it didn’t work, could you please unlock her account and change her password? I hope I’m not becoming a BOFH, but sometimes saying no feels so good. E: My manager emailed me and congratulated me on handling the request perfectly. First I said it would be a violation of security policy, then when she pushed back I sent her the acceptable use policy that was sent to every employee last week saying never to share passwords. 22 Eargesplitten fucked around with this message at 20:17 on Jan 16, 2018 |

And who knows, maybe he’ll come through for you sometime. I had lost a really lovely job at 16.5/hr in 2016, got submitted for a job at $22/hr and was told I didn’t get it on Friday. First thing in the morning Monday I get a call saying they want me after all. Either later Monday or on Tuesday somebody I worked with way back in 2014 messaged me on LinkedIn. Turns out he worked there, said he heard I had applied, and that he hoped I got it. My only conclusion is that I got a 33% pay bump after a month of unemployment because of a guy that I worked with but barely interacted with years before. A guy you helped get a job like that, he’ll definitely vouch for you in the future.

Personally I think it’s kind of gross because I don’t like tomato soup.

Another desktop support guy got fired today. Apparently he had missed at least one day per week 7/8 of the weeks he was here. He missed 23% of the days he was supposed to be working. We’re having a really hard time finding and holding onto good employees on that team. Not sure if it’s pay or poor interviewing or what. Bright side I get to see if a former coworker is interested. If he is, referral bonus.

Sure, money I can't count on and that will be taxed out the rear end is the same thing as an increase in pay, thanks. Not count on is true, but it’s actually taxed at the same rate as everything else, more is just withheld in most cases. You either get it back as a refund or adjust your withholdings to take advantage of it.

Is there any way to shrink PDF file sizes if you only have Acrobat Reader? People keep sending PDFs too large for our software’s document archive. I tried doing print to pdf with just one page and it somehow came out larger. The options for shrinking PPI or resolution don’t work in Reader. The last thing I can think of is take a screenshot and shrink it, but I don’t know if they need the W9s as PDFs for some reason.

Maybe my router’s WiFi just isn’t very good, but I started getting way faster down speeds once I moved my router onto my desk and directly connected. You also never drop your WiFi connection and aren’t sending anything over the air when you’re wired in.

Yeah, mine was N-band, I think I have AC now but moved the router before I bought the new computer. Sounds like no matter what you're not going to get anything approaching gigabit through WiFi. Gigabit is kind of excessive either way, but if you're paying for it you might as well use it.

I will admit I haven't upgraded my modem to something that can handle my full 200mbits because I don't want to spend the money, and I only have the 200 because it was a promo that was cheaper than my 75. I can still download games off of Steam at 16mbps while my wife is streaming Netflix, that's good enough.
