Meraki are already trying this, though from what I gather the products are poo poo and lack really basic features, as well as costing a fortune.

Somehow Meraki have managed to do the worst of both worlds - the cameras rely on a cloud service to function and to be licensed, but they store all their video locally.

So if somebody walks up to your camera then rips it down and takes it with them, the recording is lost.

I bought a cheap as gently caress Epson multifunction inkjet 4 years ago and have run it on £10 of third party ink cartridges since then (I print very little - shipping labels for eBay and tickets to things). I mainly got it because it would scan direct to Google Drive / Dropbox as well as having a duplex ADF, so I could finally turn loads of scraps of paper into PDFs and shred the originals. Would buy again. I'd be happy with a mono laser but duplex ADFs on a laser seem to push the price up a ton.

Don't let your paper get damp/dusty seems to be the way to avoid paper jams. Leave it in the waxy packet until it's ready to use, if you only print a couple of sheets each week then don't put the entire ream of paper into your printer.

My experience with Sonicwall has been terrible. We got onto the Gen6 train far too early (had no option though unless we wanted to buy old hardware) and it was a complete shitshow for a very long time. I still would try and avoid having things like a VLAN-tagged WAN interface because so much stuff just flat-out broke the last time I tried it.

I have a Fortigate E-series running 5.6 and it's nice but the UI tries to be too friendly. The amount of poo poo you can't edit once it's in use is infuriating as well, and the CLI is pretty horrific.

In short: all SMB UTM type appliances are pieces of poo poo in their own ways.

Some site we look after has been having some devices acting up, so I log into their APC management card to see nearly 800 power spike events and over 150 brownouts in a week, and their mains voltage is a good 15% lower than it should be. I think that might be related to your issues.

We only look after the network kit, so it's just CYA at this point - if they melt some gear we can point at the power.

It sounds like they've run cable too far for the size of the conductors and are suffering a voltage drop as a result, I can't believe it's entering the building that low. I wouldn't be surprised if they have no concept of phase balancing either, having seen the quality of the electrical work there.

It's normally fine, the company will call their supplier and they will send round the actual grid operator for this area, and somebody will test the levels where they're handed off. If they're fine then that's the end of it, if not they'll normally change the tap point at the substation that feeds the customer to get the voltage up a bit.

I really doubt this is low at the point of entry, usually we have things running a bit too high but nothing that a UPS can't drop down again.

It didn't turn the power off, it just wiped the config and to be honest once it happened once you'd realise what was going on. lovely design but then so are most booted cables.

Extending RS-232 over long twisted pair cabling is slightly screwy as well, as the wiring isn't balanced. RS-422 and RS-485 covers that.

I work the counter and float around the building but I'm also supposed to be the first line for phone calls; I've been eyeing a Plantronics bluetooth earpiece thingy since we got the VoIP phones but I can't see them shelling out $500 for it despite the fact that I could answer phones anywhere in the showroom.

Don't get a Bluetooth earpiece, get one that wires from your phone to a base station and then uses DECT to talk to the headset. I have a Savi W710 and it's really good, and was nowhere near that price.

Talk to people about this (keep posting) because otherwise you're going to think your work environment is reasonable and you're the problem, and it's tough to get out from under that. Every time you think something is hosed up, post and lots of people that don't know you and have nothing to gain from agreeing with you will tell you that you're right.

Edit: Also I have no idea how web filtering is done for schools over in the US, but is there not like a statewide thing you can just use that is paid for centrally, or is that too much like socialism?

The State department of Law enforcement can suck my dick.

My group operates the network for a ~250k resident municipality. Our entire WAN is dark fiber. Owned by us and nothing riding on it but our traffic. Criminal Justice data goes through the police department segment and out a special circuit and ASA owned by State law enforcement as well. There's other safeguards as well like Netsight policies that disallow non LEO subnets to see anything at the station as well. The police station connection to the 911 dispatch is also dark fiber. Someone decided they wanted a line to look different on their Visio so now we have to put firewalls on each end of those segments and back to the core or they will declare us non-compliant. Mind you these links are 10G and a 20G lag, so we have to put in beefy enough hardware to full-on encrypt at those speeds. Never mind that the application data itself is encrypted and over private fiber. It's a shitload of money and trouble for something that is encrypting already encrypted data. We can do it, but drat.

Welp, we just got a new monkey wrench to throw into this blender full of donkey gently caress. They want to stretch the virtual host clusters at the station and E911 to V-motion back and forth.

So we have to do a VXLAN between the two sites.
Encrypted through a couple of HA Checkpoint clusters (I'm not even sure you can tunnel through it that way)
At 10-20G Speeds.
And reliable enough for Public Safety.

What could possibly go wrong? :suicide:

Do the encryption on something designed for this, like https://www.advaoptical.com/en/innovation/network-security
