That's all the response I need :v:

This episode features the section that irritates me the most in the entire game. The dual turret section. It's sluggish, it's brutal and boring at the same time, it's not fun, Rhodes is an rear end in a top hat. I don't think I got this pissed off at a game since Blood Omen 2. Luckily, the game is going to pick up in quality after this.

I also stopped doing subtitles halfway through the video as per the public response

Heck, even Doom 1/2 suffers from a weak sounding chaingun. How come the one from Wolfenstein 3-D sounds like a monster in comparison?

Bulletstorm has a good turret section on the train, you're still mobile and cover is a concern, you get a huge gun and it isn't a frustratingly hard break from the rest of the gameplay.

Much like turret sections, grenades in video games seem to be pretty hard to do right. I just kind of felt sad when the grenade launcher ended up doing more in friendly fire.

So...
  • You being offended by the line about Russian bears? Hilarious.
  • I really had no idea that you're invincible during the first "turret" section.
  • Yeah, that truck-mounted turret section really gave me trouble too... and I wasn't even playing on the hardest difficulty. The part with Rhodes is bad enough, but the next one had me replaying over and over until I figured out where to point the stupid thing, shoot, and then turn toward the next one. Not cool.
  • Comment about Russian police: oooh, topical!
  • The Stroggs basically write in l33t. They also act like they write in l33t.
  • If you're angry, you should curse more. In Russian. I like being able to curse in several languages. I think that the only one I know is "Bohze moi".
  • I forget, is the Engineer invincible? I don't remember. That's be the trifecta, wouldn't it? Pointless turret section, bad turret section, escort mission.

this turret section was where I stopped playing when I tried this on General years ago. In fact I feel like the turret sections and the general linearity of the game just made playing through the game multiple times more of a chore than actual fun and a challenge.

At least they learned their lesson with the new Doom as far as difficulty goes

1. Not the line. I'm offended by the guy being Nikolai Sledgeonovich or Slejonovich or whatever the gently caress. No Russian last name will ever use the 'j' sound, because this sound is only present in loanwords. Alternatively, if the guy is supposed to be a Balkan Slav, then what the gently caress was that line about Russian bears and he would be Nikola, not Nikolai
2. gently caress yeah
3. Bozhe moi isn't even a curse, it's literally like me saying 'ga-hd' in English

You are confusing it with 'f', 'j' is totally legit, and is even a purely-slavic addition to all those greek letters in cyrillic. Surely 'jivete' is present in 'zhena', 'knyazhich' and 'druzhina' (wife, young prince and warband, very core words), and even in your 'bozhe moi' expletive ;).

This does not make Sledgeonovich any less idiotic, though.

Nice Quake 4 LP, by the way; I played it on release, but drat if I remember anything but the plot 'twist' (the original Quake 2, which was about as brown and bland even before Call of Duty, at least was THE game at multiplayer LAN clubs for about two or three years before CS took over everywhere).

It's dzh vs zh. Russian words have zh and don't have dzh. We only say dzh in loanwords and foreign names, including names of other Slavs that do have dzh :v:

And thanks!

Maybe his family moved to Russia and assimilated but kept the surname. Or maybe Russia finally managed to achieve the Pan-Slavic dream and annexed all of eastern Europe.

That makes it funnier. I think I have one of those names that gets mispronounced no matter where I go. The strangest was when I visited Uzbekistan, where they inserted an "x" where no "x" was meant to go.

I'd been hoping they'd just add an "-owich" to the end of my name, but no such luck.

Alexeythegreat posted:

3. Bozhe moi isn't even a curse, it's literally like me saying 'ga-hd' in English

Well, curse words don't have to be obscene, they just need to be shouted out at volume. One of my friends liked saying "scheisse", but to me, it isn't German unless you have that hard "ach" noise in the middle, so I prefer "ach du lieber". French has a very brief "merde", but it has their throat-scratchy "r" in the middle, so that's okay. I rather liked "madre dios" (or rather, "madre de dios"), but my wife found it offensive when I told her what it means, so I've stopped.

Shame. I liked rolling the "r" when I'd say it.

Actually, Czech would disagree with some of its more insane consonant stacking, such as "prd" (fart) or "do prdele" (oh poo poo!). Prd in particular can be turned into the ultimate dismissal, it's like dropping an anvil on the argument if pronounced with care.

Something else that Quake games don't do that Quake 4 does are vehicle sections. Unlike the turret sections, the vehicle sections are a lot less grating and are even fun at first. It doesn't hurt that they aren't particularly difficuly, even on max difficulty. The first vehicle is the hovercraft, which regenerates armor (so I assume it's something biomechanical like the Technopolip from Serious Sam 3: BFE, because how else would a tank regenerate armor), shoots slow rockets, and can kill things by ramming into them.

Also, giant spiders.

It feels like they weren't going for much of a horror vibe, though, what with the constant presence of other space dudes, constant military chatter, etc. it's hard to do horror without some sense of isolation or loneliness.
