Not necessarily nominating it as an honorable mention, but it's worth checking out the opener from CMLL's show last night: Fiero, Flyer, Magia Blanca vs El Coyote, Templario, Yago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx5NRXIRd04&t=108s The other 51 weeks out of the year it's almost always safe to skip the first and usually second matches on a CMLL Friday show. Last night was a special Saturday show for Three Kings' Day and I guess they told the prelim guys they could do whatever they wanted. So they went wild, and it turned out great. Match is only about 10 minutes long and it's worth your time. Plus you get to see Yago's entrance. Afterwards they do a ceremony to present Fiero with the legacy gimmick of "El Audaz" and promise more opportunities for young wrestlers in 2018. I look forward to the Audaz/Templario rivalry continuing for the foreseeable future. Also, "Magia Blanca" is what all the ladies call me.

I watched the +Lucha version of the Imposible/Dr. Cerebro match and I would rate it as "OK" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QQiQ3YJWSA I waited until they posted this version, which has much better video quality, better commentary, and better sound balancing so you can hear the crowd. They actually get pretty hot down the stretch. Obviously the promotion is to blame for a show and match rule set that eliminates crowd brawling and dives, which are the two strongest parts of IWRG. Still, the first 10 minutes are perfectly fine considering this restriction. I expected the post-ladder part to be awful but it wasn't that bad. The guys thought of all the unique ways they could utilize the "carry the belt" part of the rules and did a good enough job performing them. The Ovett/Chico Che hair match on the same show was much worse than this, but I also couldn't put that up for WMotY because of the visual of Ovett getting his head shaved looking sad with 10 colored thumb tacks stuck in his forehead is worth the 10 minutes you waste on the match itself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaLQCHi2MAw

Now that the insane weekend of shows has died down, I want to post these so they can get some eyes on them: MOTYC: Volador Jr. © vs Bárbaro Cavernario [NWA WELTER] – NJPW Fantastica Mania Night Two – 01/21 https://njpwworld.com/p/s_series_00464_2_1 (1:59) Both guys getting their moves in and the crowd and commentary heightening the drama. Best possible version of this match. HM: Mephisto © vs Titán [CMLL WELTER] – CMLL Martes de Nuevos Valores – 01/23 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDpiSiCfpdY&t=5895s A title match in Arena Mexico on a Tuesday that was good enough to rival Volador/Cavernario's battle in Japan. Agility versus punishment is the story here. Titán is giving it his all and the crowd is into it. They have a very long third fall, which is the key to the best title matches in CMLL. I bought into the near falls at the end, and the actual finish was cool.

Not necessarily HMs but I guess there's no reason not to post it in here too: Averno, Chessman, Súper Fly © vs Aerostar, Drago, Raptor vs Angelikal, Bengala, Máscara de Bronce vs Carta Brava Jr., Mocho Cota Jr., Tito Santana [AAA TRIOS] – AAA – 01/26/2018 – GREAT https://www.twitch.tv/videos/222760866?t=01h25m48s A match in one of the most classic lucha formats: put a ton of guys out there so they can do all their coolest moves. And wow do they ever. The “story” actually breaks down into the tecnicos teams doing the wildest flips possible while the rudo teams do the most mask ripping possible. Aerostar doesn’t climb the lighting rig in this one but don’t let that stop you from seeing the insane thing he does do. Psycho Clown vs Rey Escorpión [bull terrier] – AAA – 01/26/2018 – GREAT https://www.twitch.tv/videos/222760866?t=01h53m04s This ended up being my favorite match on Guerra de Titanes. A top quality brawl with added humor constructed around how stupid bull terrier/chain/strap matches are with their “touch the corners” rules. The part where Rey Escorpión finally gets the chain on made me laugh harder than anything in wrestling in a long time. And then they bleed a lot all over the place. The finish is a AAA finish, but what can you do.

I vote for Niebla/Soberano as HM and UG/Volador vs Rush/Terrible as MOTYC as well. Both guys bring their biggest moves. The finish is very cool. Último Guerrero & Volador Jr. vs Rush & Terrible [natl pi, final] – CMLL – 02/23/2018 – EXCELLENT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnczGJl5WU8&t=1h38m43s The "incredible pairs" tournament each year seems to be a place where you are guaranteed an impeccably worked final with a match-up that you don't see regularly. This year's final wasn't as good in the ring as last year's (which won the Luchablog Tapatia Match of the Year) but the story it told kept it on the same high level that you expect. Volador is sporting a face mask from a nose injury suffered against Último Guerrero earlier in the week, and now they have to team up to battle two guys who seem to have the chemistry that you wouldn't expect from a pareja increíble of enemies. The match builds and the brawling is great and the storytelling is great and the result is great. Don't skip on the few minutes post-match either, it's important to the story. Any wrestling fan should go out of their way to see this match.

Maybe this is a match that's more of an HM to you all, but I'm voting with my heart: MOTYC: Soberano Jr. vs Bárbaro Cavernario – CMLL – 03/27/2018 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rZRU6xV13I&t=1h25m52s I had last October's Puebla meeting between these two as my favorite CMLL match of 2017. This meeting has a completely different feel in Arena México. This is is rudo Cavernario, barbarian Cavernario. Not just everyone's favorite fun caveman. By the end of the second fall you feel like it doesn't matter who actually wins the match, Soberano lost it due to the punishment he endured. Throw in an unconventional fall structure, a crowd that they reel in as the match goes on, and the fact that they turn in such a good performance with nothing on the line on a Tuesday night and you get a match that I highly recommend.

Random four-match series recommendation, although I would go HM for the final meeting hair vs hair: Dr. Cerebro vs Ricky Marvin – IWRG – 03/2018 03/04 – One Fall: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pBx3qhnvds – GOOD 03/11 – One Fall, Super Libre (No DQ): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXnJs-ROgKc – FUN 03/18 – IWRG Intercontinental Middleweight Championship: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-u5l2JKpdk8 – GOOD 03/25 – Hair vs Hair: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26bhrLDgGcc – GREAT Ricky Marvin came to IWRG and wrestled Dr. Cerebro every Sunday in March, with escalating stakes. Marvin’s having an incredible 2018 so far since leaving AAA for the Mexican indies. I found all the matches to be enjoyable but the final encounter was especially great. World veteran vs. local veteran is a solid premise for a feud and they did excellent technical wrestling and brawling in this series.

HM: The Hooligans vs The Ugly Ducklings - NOVA Pro Threat of Joy 5/11 HM: Logan Easton Laroux vs Jonathan Gresham vs Tracy Williams [PB.tv Independent] - NOVA Pro Threat of Joy 5/11 Two very strong matches from last night's Powerbomb NOVA Pro stream that are worth going out of your way to see. Hooligans vs Ducklings felt like the pinnacle of two very good tag teams. The main event had some of the most creative three-way spots I've seen in a match, and just generally had more interaction and less "one guy resting on the outside" than you usually see in a triple threat.

MOTYC: Arcángel Divino, Black Destiny, Genio del Aire vs Black Danger, Mirage, Último Maldito - AAA - 4/20 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqHmlSQ94Us&t=190s Just got freed from the Twitch paywall to Youtube. The most insane high flying spot match you will see all year. These guys are all regulars on The Crash doing this stuff but that never makes tape, so we're blessed they booked them in AAA. I'll also note that the cruiserweight #1 contenders 4-man that starts around 35:30 I'd also put at almost HM level, and the tag title match starting at like 50:20 is good too. All around this is a very solid episode of wrestling television.

Yeah I guess I'll throw in some actual positive recs from the show: HM: Arkángel Divino, Dinastía, Hijo Del Vikingo, Star Fire vs Arez, Belial, Lady Maravilla, Último Maldito - AAA Verano de Escandalo 6/3 HM: OGTs (Averno, Chessman, Súper Fly) vs Poder del Norte (Carta Brava Jr., Mocho Cota Jr., Tito Santana) [hair] - AAA Verano de Escandalo 6/3 The Psycho Clown match was very good but not at the level of those other two. It was memorable. I am going to try to have a full AAA recs post up this week based on all the shows since 3/25. If you spend the $5 or Twitch Prime sub to watch AAA, there has been at least one great match on like the last 5 shows.

HM: Jonathan Gresham vs. Timothy Thatcher - NOVA Pro Wrestling Harlem Nights - 7/28 Will probably have to bump this one when they post the show on Powerbomb, because I saw it live. I had never seen Thatcher before because I don't actually follow indie wrestling, but was tremendous and they did a great match based around the size difference between the two guys.
