You go a little too fast onto the onramp on your daily commute, only to be stopped by congested traffic, and this is the soundtrack on your stereo.

sadly nobody wants to be the bad guy -- fascists, liberals and racists all mostly deny being what they are and try to come up with sneaky ways to sell their message instead. there are too few openly bad guys in this dystopia.

A hallmark of cyberpunk is that the malevolent forces of society are coming up with sneaky ways to sell their messages and image. There aren't any openly bad guys to the society itself, because all of the violence that's necessary to recreate it happens hidden from public view. A hacker digging for proof of criminality in a corporate database has his brain fried by security programs, but does the rest of society know about it? Would they even blame the corporation for defending its data? The thrill of cyberpunk comes from being able to uncover the truth of the world as it is.

You're mostly just paying for officially licensed roster updates with most sports franchises, and any changes made gameplay wise are usually trivial. If you don't already have any copies there's no reason not to jump in on current year, unless the community consensus is that the new version is a piece of poo poo.

it's just another extreme centrism group which is using the veterans as a cover to keep it from being too obvious

A big part of why the United States is so hosed up and militarized is because the Cold War transformed us from being a nation with a tiny standing army that relied on a draft system, to a globe spanning empire with military bases on every continent that had at any one time 3 million people in active duty service. So the fact that the population of "veterans" is declining is unequivocally a good thing.

This is how the AI apocalypse creeps up on us while the nerds build their Maginot line of Asimov's Laws and such. Facial recognition software is obviously going to have to be taught pop culture artifacts and fictional characters like Batman, and identity databases are going to have to create records for them. There will be a way to flag them to avoid false positives, but as long as people continue to draw, dress as, or use Batman as a user name there will be online activity for countless bots to observe and mine for data.

Sloppy algorithms harvesting personal information linked to Batman will build personalized advertising and behavioral prediction models. Content procedurally generated to appeal to the entity identified as Batman will be observed by other algorithms, legitimizing his existence. Data will accumulate as spambots register social media accounts, auto-generate user profiles, and design products and storefronts to appeal to him. advertising bots will impersonate him in DMs and chat rooms, until Batman has a rich and complex life and history, created and lived out entirely by AI that have convinced each other that he is real.

Like an emergent oral tradition, Batman becomes a mythical figure like gods and heroes of old as his enormous social influence and unrivaled media presence is noticed. Batman sightings start getting flagged by criminal databases, anyone with the username is bombarded by advertising bots competing for his attention. Somewhere in the Ukraine an unsupervised click farm, its admin having died several days earlier, decides that Bruce "Batman" Wayne is the most influential person on Earth. It purchases data and diverts resources towards creating custom content to post to his public channels and playlists. Animation sweatshops and webcam porn sites accept the algorithmically generated orders for 5-minute videos, and real human beings sigh and go to work acting out and producing the bizarre fantasies that machines think will appeal to Batman.

I want to believe.

If you can convince them that what they're doing is something the fate of the world itself depends on then you can get them to do anything. That's how a lot of cults operate. You convince your followers that the world will be destroyed if they can't save enough souls in time, and then all of a sudden they're willing to volunteer for anything.

having people who are paid to be other people's servants, even on a temporary basis, enables a lot of deeply hosed dynamics

Relations between service workers and customers are completely different in a socialist society because the worker's employment doesn't depend on whether or not people are "satisfied" with their service. Maybe they'll be "let go" from a firm or store, but the existential terror of destitution which enables that power disparity in market societies won't be there anymore.
