My dad has been working in teleco since before I was born and while it's totally something that hasn't been fixed earlier because the capital doesn't will it to be, it's a more complicated than just arbitrary pricing.

While the data of some messages and voice are now barely a spit that will get lost among just thumbnails of porn videos transferred alone, the telco infrastructure is very rigid and complex in administrative sense and the companies have significant operating overhead in even just billing the traffic appropriately, which also comes with load of weird legal burden and cruft

What's worse is that the interface between national operators is often the meeting point of potentially practically proprietary networks and administrative processes means a lot of extra effort in maintaining reliable compatibility and accountability wrt all the legal burden and so

For international transmission of calls and messages the operators have to maintain a pretty complex network of contacts and agreements with each other not to mention the infrastructure that's to a degree specific to any one operator and country

In the end international telco operates a little bit more similar to postal service (which shouldn't be so surprising since it pretty much evolved from it) and while the pricing looks crazy expensive and pointless in post internet world, it's cause it's pretty much super petrified and often backwards

are you trying to defend the telco’s here or

no not really at all, my point is that while there is lovely phenomena that are 100% direct fault of the capital and the markets (cost of living, healthcare, education, stagnant wages), in this case the primary fault is that the entire system is based on principles and processes that can be directly traced back to 200 years ago and never made it past these, and capitals wills it to stay that way because telecom extremely quickly switched from being extremely profitable (being this way) to being barely profitable and extremely expensive to fix (to not be

i can feel that.

My last long time place of employment had an elevator where if you held in the button for what floor you wanted for 11 seconds it would skip all other floors. It was apparently meant to be for management only because the boss flew off her loving handle when she saw us peasants using it. BECAUSE WHAT IF SHE HAD IMPORTANT poo poo TO DO AND HAD TO SPEND AN EXTRA THIRTY SECONDS IN AN ELEVATOR??? Disregarding the fact that we were the only ones clocked on loving everything and her day was spent mostly massaging the numbers to look good until lunch (11-1) and then disappear.. She's now the "president" of our parliament.
