Remedial landscape practice with references. Complicated stuff is a big problem, since far off details like cityscapes seem like they should be simplified but I haven't figured out how to do it in a way that feels right, and I can't replicate stuff like mountains and rocks well from imagination. Bottom right was just a thing from imagination for fun.

Sharpest Crayon posted:Try to spend as little time on the furthest stuff as you can. Practice trying to capture the essence of the shapes without refining them too much. And when you've done that, don't stare at them individually and think "no this looks like just a blob I better pull out the tiny brush and get to work", let you eye travel across the pic like a casual observers eye would. Having said that, you've still got a good sense of depth on them all. Thanks for the help. I don't know what it is, it just feels like sometimes when there's too much variation on a surface or environment I have trouble getting the idea of it down and it takes a lot longer than it really should. I think it's just a problem of getting psyched out by textures. I might have to start doing these without my glasses. I did these today. I think the left one's a little more successful. Then I drew a space pirate. That's a good Frank.

Today was bad and unproductive and this is everything I thought I might wanna look at again. Human faces are hard.

Today was just not a good day. I gotta experiment more with brush settings and make some new brushes so they're easy to get at or something because jeez. Figuring out paper textures better and actually using them might help too.

I've been having a bad few days with my art where I don't do as much as I want. I was gonna do some surreal landscape thumbnails but it didn't get any further than this: ThePlague-Daemon fucked around with this message at 07:26 on Mar 2, 2018 |

Didn't do much new today, just went back and built on yesterday's stuff. The landscape stuff is fun, I just need to put in more effort.

Radio du Cambodge posted:I think it looks cool, I don't know anything about digital brushes but I am always impressed by people building up landscapes and faces and stuff from such fat strokes of color. So different from how I perceive and construct things in my own drawings. Thanks. I like seeing other people do it, but it's not my usual thing, so I didn't feel like I was putting it to good use. Internet Kraken posted:You could be the most amazing artist in the world and it wouldn't matter if nobody ever saw your art. Putting your art on the internet and hoping people randomly stumble across it is a crapshoot. Yeah, I can confirm this. I tend to like drawing anthropomorphic creatures and animals anyway, so I tried marketing non-pornographic commissions at furries, but I only ever got one commission. I didn't try to go any deeper into that community, because I kinda get worried about that association as it is, so I regret it. I'm not good a good learner though because I spent the last couple days working on this for one of their contests on deviantart (using this reference): I didn't feel right about entering it, so I didn't, and it kinda soured me on finishing it.

Still a work in progress, but I'm really liking it:Sharpest Crayon posted:Oh hey nevermind that this was days ago it looks pretty hecking sweet and I always wanted to ask what the contest was about and why you decided not to do it? Was it deviantart drama? Please tell me it was deviantart drama. Nah. I stumbled across something called AnthroChallenge, and I misread the prize info and thought it was how that particular mod selected front page features, but it turned out it was just the front page of the AnthroChallenge group, which isn't really a lot of exposure. Also I think my art's better than a lot of the entries and past winners by a kind of unfair amount, so I just felt kinda iffy about entering it given that I'm not invested in that community and I don't even want the prize that much. Cool dragon btw This is really good! These are so hard to do well. ThePlague-Daemon fucked around with this message at 08:26 on Mar 9, 2018 |

MTV Crib Death posted:Amazing. Do you have a ballpark estimate of the time that goes into something like this? Honestly it takes me way more time than it probably should, since I'm pretty terrible about doing proper thumbnails and preplanning, so I end up having to change a lot. I think that particular version is somewhere like 6+ hours (this is probably a low estimate) but with false starts and redoing the background when I decided I didn't like how the first version was looking. Speed's kind of a problem area for me but it's getting a lot better.

MTV Crib Death posted:I think if I hadn't smashed her chin in, it would look a good deal like her. I also got the bridge of the nose all wrong which in turn ruined her right eye. Hard to see these things in the thick of it. Try lining up the edge of your pencil horizontally and vertically with points on the edges of the features so you can see where things should be lining up. That would help you spot things like where the edge of the nostril is relative to the edge of the mouth and far eyebrow without having to use a smaller grid (unless you wanted to). Even with a grid sometimes I find it really easy to get too focused on making stuff look good in isolation, but what you want is for everything to work together, and I find that technique really helps when I remember to do it. Also, you can figure out some guidelines early on if you line up the edge of your pencil along the edge of straight-ish area like the edge of the forehead and see where the line would intersect along the grid if it kept going straight, which could help with angles and stuff. You can also simplify complicated stuff like the edge of the eyebrow to the chin or the edges of the hair into one guideline and kinda work with it from there.

I managed to get this as done as it's gonna get. I still need to get better at a lot of things. JoshTheStampede posted:Can you talk a little about your process? I usually go in trying to do some thumbnail sketches, then blocking in the colors and values, and then trying to build it up from there, but I've got a bad habit of going overboard on one area for longer than I should when more of the painting needs my attention. I want to get better at establishing my lights and darks earlier on before I try to go in with more details. I've got a habit of jumping into the painting part when the sketch is a little too bland, also. I just need to get out of the habit of skipping ahead and giving myself more work later on.

Yeah, what I've found is people generally don't stick around past one piece. I'm getting a lot more views than normal on this one, but just a couple new followers and a little better than average user page views (this is all on deviantart). I got a Daily Deviation awhile back but even that wasn't a huge gain. I wanna get more involved in an art community, but I never know where to start.
