I think the movement in twwhd has enough variation that you’re never gonna see a run (with the new strat) be beaten by another run exclusively due to using a fairy. Especially not at world record level imo, I don’t think anyone is masochistic enough to try to save maybe 30 seconds on a 5% chance thing that’s at the very end of the (albeit only) 1 hour+ run, unless they really only care about getting wr and are less than 30s behind a wr that doesn’t use fairy skip.

Screencapping this for eventual use in the SummoningSalt Wind Waker WR Progression video

Basically all LTTP rando that’s not open/standard feels really off to me in a deeply uninteresting way. Enemizer was fun to watch for like 15 minutes but after that became really dull.

I think it’s because LttP Rando has been around for far longer than any of us have been paying attention (that’s certainly the case for me at least) and so the community as a whole wants to shake things up from standard Open mode races. Sucks for the rest of us because I agree, Keysanity and Exit Randomizer are just a little too inside baseball for me to really get into.

Why can’t there just be two categories, the way any other game would handle it?

That’s sort of what the did with Breath of the Wild back when they thought Amiibos would make the run faster, isn’t it?

I think Super Mario RPG fits this description, in fact I think it was brought up in this thread not too long ago. If I wasn’t phone posting I’d look for it for ya

Any good recommendations for entertaining speedruns of games that were never really intended to be played quickly, or that have some crazy sequence-breaking flaw that makes them an unlikely favorite of streamers?

In a lot of ways you could say that racing games make for pretty boring speedruns because they're sort of just "play the game good" and while that's certainly impressive and sometimes fun to watch, it's not a very interesting speedrun. That being said, I've enjoyed watching both Mario Kart 64 and F-Zero 64 due to the insane wall clips and tiny ways to optimize time here and there. Beat em ups sort of fall into this category too imo because they're somewhat on rails. TMNT: Turtles In Time on SNES is an interesting run to watch for small, enemy management-type optimizations to watch.

Oh and it's not quite what you asked for, but get a load of this loving DK64 vid

The SpeedGaming channel on Twitch announced the seeding for the first (massive) round of the upcoming LttP Rando tournament and I thought the way they did it was pretty clever. They got the two finalists of the 2017 tournament, ajneb174 & Willard J. Bradley, to play a game of rando with all items pre-collected, and instead of going around looking for items, then were pulling the names of the participants. When one name was found, whichever name was pulled next was who they would face off against in the first round. Kind of a cool way to do that imo!

Also I signed up to do some item tracking! I initially signed up to do commentary, but it involved a knowledge quiz and I got a Discord notification about it on a Friday night when I was at a bar after a friend's rehearsal dinner. I excitedly took the quiz right then and there and probably hosed it up pretty bad due to being 3-4 drafts deep. Oops!

Ultra Hype for the Mario Maker relay to come back. The Mario Maker community is chock full of people who completely own—level creators, streamers, organizers, etc.—so that's pretty much guaranteed to be entertaining as hell. CarlSagan42 is practically a YouTube celeb by this point, GrandPOOBear wowed everyone with his Super Dram World 2 run last year, and the other four, while being less popular, are also all really fun streamers to watch (GlitchCat7, failstream, jaku, & Cliffy)

Yeah IIRC most games don't capture footage and reshow it for a replay as that would take a ton of memory. They just simulate the exact motions again and gently caress with the camera or whatever. If the motions were too hosed up to recreate, shenanigans ensue

I trust this thread and the people in it when they say KevinDDR is in the clear, but can somebody help me understand how? Because what I saw was chuds talking about a bunch of hosed up poo poo in a discord, then he popped in with an asinine comment about his weight, then the chuds continued the conversation. Was he truly just deep undercover or some poo poo? I don't see how it's okay to ignore that kind of talk going on around you, let alone participate in the conversation, even if what you say is okay on its own.

TBH I was also confused by his tweet towards GDQ calling them spineless fucks. That just made me even more confused because ironically it wasn't clear what he was mad about specifically.

Does anyone get what I'm saying here? Just want to try to understand what it is about KevinDDR that gives him a pass since the only thing I see is kind of damning. Sounds like there's additional proof vouching for him somewhere? Can I see/hear that?

Please don't bother reading posts from the past in that thread. Instead, just go to the newest page and say "hey everybody! What have I missed in the last x hours/days?" Some helpful speedfriend will summarize for you, and may even link you to relevant supporting links/posts. Then proceed to watch the marathon and :justpost:

I used to run LISA: The Painful.

The first real boss you fight is a Mutant that can one-shot most of your underlevelled party, and you also walk through a fairly dangerous field full of snakes. You have to: Confuse the mutant (low success chance), then get him to hit himself (somewhat high success chance), and then preferably crit himself. Then you have to survive the walk back.

There's a russian roulette section that kills party members. I've never lost anyone important since you choose who goes in, but you could lose the party member that matters, or just die outright.

Every Campfire you'll sleep at has a chance of causing really negative effects (party member being kidnapped, robbed), etc. You can protect against it but it's super likely to happen.

Then all the normal 'RPG bullshit"

How many arms do you have left at the end of a typical LISA run?

I had this same problem while playing SimCity for SNES; I was super curious to learn what it'd look like to speedrun to Megalopolis, but every speedrun I found used a cheat to basically get infinite money. That's no fun! :(

But yeah, that's a nice thing about speedrunning: there's as many speedruns as there are games. Don't like a game's speedrun? Find another one more suited to your watching tastes!
