I was surprised recently at how bad N64 emulation still is. I thought messing with a host of plugins and different emulators all day for an individual game to work without problems or glitches would be ironed out by now.

Yeah I'm using BizHawk (Mupen64 core) with GlideN64 and Glide64mk2 and there's still a lot of weird issues like water textures in Goldeneye.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I don't have the energy to screw with these things anymore. :corsair:

People love to have a reason to hate on GDQ. Why? Because you're not supposed to curse on stream? Because Mike Uyama supposedly had mono that time?

I have yet to hear a real argument. Every point is basically "this charity event, which raises millions of dollars to help people, isn't being run exactly how I would want."

Todd Roger is a really sad or perhaps even mentally ill person. I think we all know that by now. The bigger question is how or why is Twin Galaxies this biased or incompetent? "Verification" is basically "my buddy the referee agrees I got 15 million points" and if anyone else second guesses it, even with indisputable proof, they get shouted down and nothing changes. Is it possible to measure integrity as a negative number?

Former Human

Anything interesting thing about Todd's scores is that leeching is supposedly against the rules at TG yet Todd claims a billion points or something on a bunch of games. Even if it were possible to get that score (which it isn't) wouldn't that require him to stand around and farm points for hours upon hours? Wouldn't that alone invalidate the record anyway?

His behavior would definitely lend itself to a diagnosis of pathological lying. It's a real psychological disorder although it may not rise to the level of outright illness.

The CBC radio show As It Happens had a quick segment on Todd Rogers being stripped of all his records on Twin Galaxies. I thought that was amusing.

Here's the transcript from As It Happens.

quote:

JD: You may want to turn down your radios everyone, what you were about to hear is the viscerally thrilling roar of a drag race.

SOUNDCLIP

[Sound: I miss 80’s video game noises]

JD: You can practically smell the rubber burning. That's the sound of the 1980 video game "Dragster", which vividly recreated the excitement of drag racing. Except that your clutch and gearshift were a joystick, and your accelerator was a plastic button. Since 1982, one player has held the speed record for "Dragster": Todd Rogers — also known as "Toddzilla". His record was a scorching 5-point-5-1 seconds. And it wasn't just acknowledged by the video-game-record-tracking website Twin Galaxies — it was acknowledged by Guinness as well. That high score — and his many, many others — made Todd Rogers a seemingly unstoppable monster in the world of gaming. But like Godzilla, Toddzilla was — in this case, anyway — just a guy in a monster costume.

n Monday, Twin Galaxies made a shocking announcement: Todd Rogers' longstanding record was bogus. Detailed investigations and technical research had proven it was actually impossible to finish "Dragster" in 5-point-5-1 seconds. And the coup de grace may have come from former Twin Galaxies Senior Referee named Robert Mruczak, who issued a long statement expressing doubts about that record and others, despite his long friendship with Mr. Rogers, whom he called "the brother that I never had." Now, Twin Galaxies has removed every one of Todd Rogers' records from the site, and banned him for life. It's like something out of Shakespeare: a tragedy of shattered alliances, of hubris, and overreach. Or like something out of a classic movie — in which a seemingly unstoppable monster is brought down by human ingenuity, and disappears beneath the waves forever. So long,Toddzilla.

Allowing mods is incredibly dumb and I'm a little shocked get it at how comfortable so many people are with this precedent. If your run fails, for whatever reason, then try again. Putting in the time, energy, and resets is obviously a huge part of speedrunning. If people can't handle that then play something easier/more predictable or don't play at all.

A run that takes 1h43m anyway, only one minute is lost to this terrible evil oppressive RNG, and now they are introducing mods so they can avoid resets to actually achieve a record like every other game, for a game that isn't all that fun or interesting in the first place.

seems legit

It really drives home how great the design is in Mario 64.

It's the same issue I always had with the Turok games. Why is every level the size of a small nation and take an hour to navigate? Why weren't these broken down into smaller, faster maps? Especially the first game where you can only see ten feet in front of you so every hallway and cave may as well look the same and you have no idea where it's going.
