As far as plugins go, GlideN64 covers a lot of games that have previously been problems, like Body Harvest and Rogue Squadron, as well as effects that haven't been done right previously like the custom lighting in Majora's Mask and Acclaim games.

I suspect either it'd default the damage value back to 1, or a mapper was getting frustrated with getting the scripted event to work and took the hackier road.

There's a lot of stories out there from people trying edibles for the first time, being confused by it seemingly not working immediately, having more than they should then getting hit like a truck by the effects and not feeling very good at all for a while. I can easily see someone without any past experience panicking and thinking they've just poisoned themselves or overdosed or whatever and calling for help.

In actual speedrun news, some new clipping tricks have been found in Doom 64 that involve using the impact sprites drawn by the Super Shotgun to generate lag that can be used to exploit the collision detection (DK64 style?) and pass through thin bars. This can apparently save around 2-3 minutes throughout the course of a run.

The "3D" floors in Doom 64, IIRC were basically invisible lifts that instantly, silently moved into or out of place as you crossed relevant triggers in the map.

This weird grid-o-memory-tiles thing I'm pretty sure doesn't really have a comparison in the PC Doom engines where you had easy access to OOB via the noclip cheat. Probably due to memory protections that weren't present on consoles. It just kinda seems like going OOB in the console Doom ports results in all sorts of weird poo poo happening - I recall there being a bug in one map of PSX Doom where a Lost Soul could get out of the map and start wrecking havoc in the console RAM somehow...

I remember reading about this ages ago, so it wasn't too difficult to dig back up: It was the Nintendo Gateway System, which was a part of the LodgeNet hotel entertainment service.

Super Nintendo was the first game system placed in the hotels. Some old systems containing the SNES still reside in certain hotels too stubborn to upgrade their equipment. Then came the N64, and after that, the Gamecube. But, as many hotels are/were too cheap to upgrade, the N64 resides in many locations still.

We were working on a Wii product for a while, but I think the risk of placing the required equipment in all of the rooms far outweighed the possible revenue generation. Now, you can find hotels with a custom Wii interface installed in their public areas, such as the foyer. LodgeNet has a very strong relationship with Nintendo. I even managed to get a Wii shipped to my door during the holiday season at a (very slightly) discounted price back when they were impossible to get a hold of in 2006-7.

As far as the SNES, N64, and GameCube are concerned, the games are stored on a central server in the LodgeNet equipment rack in the hotel's underbelly. The controller connects to the internal card (or set top box on older systems) that handles all the LodgeNet traffic for movies, games, music, etc. and the game plays from the central server.

I'm assuming this is the ESA schedule, and while it has some TR games, the only PS1-era one is TR3 (which is sandwiched between Guardian of Light and the awful Angel of Darkness). That said, I agree. I've had Footi's stream on my other monitor while doing stuff recently, and those PS1-era games are fun runs with a lot of entertaining bugs.

Rando tournaments go on a long time, but each round by its very nature is different in some way, so there's always interesting changing and adaption of strategies going on that keeps things fresh. I feel they could be sped up by having, say, four player races instead of two player in the earlier stages, but this would also increase the difficulty of dealing with tech, getting everyone's schedules in sync etc. and some work would have to be done re: layouts, commentary and the like to ensure everything is still easy for viewers to keep track of.
