The WRC season swings into action now with Rally Monte Carlo. Two tricky night stages tonight before the show really gets going tomorrow morning. Monte Carlo is one of the definite rally classics with massivly changing conditions and narrow tricky roads, often with sheer drops. WRC+ coverage is supposed to be better this year with live coverage (though not necessarily live car footage). You can get a month free non-binding trial with the code WRC18ASI https://plus.wrc.com/en/live-stages/live/

Mikkelsen who was probably in the best position to challenge Ogier out with alternator issues. That sucks. I hope Big Ott will have some pace

Footage from the first stage where everyone hosed up yesterday. Who would have known slicks on ice is pretty slippery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQfitw_C7Co

Rally is the only sport i can think of where a guy in a pink panther/pig costume and his friends can make a tangible positive difference to the result. There is no way Neuville would have gotten out on his own, but he has a chance to score some points now.

Good news rally fans https://www.motorsport-news.co.uk/news/rallying-news/wrc/safari-rally-set-for-wrc-return-by-2020/ Although I suspect it will be a normal stage rally set in Kenya rather than the overland rally of old. Another snow rally in Canada sounds cool too. Rally Sweden starts tomorrow btw.

The frontrunners being salty about road position was great. I laughed at Tanak telling the organizers to go screw themselves. That's rally buddy. Ogier deliberately being late to the start to get power stage point was pretty funny too. Stoked for Breen though. If he had only won every full time driver in the field would have had a win. The championship looks like it could be tasty this year. Neuville Tanak and Ogier all look capable of taking it, with Latvalla and Mikkelsen getting in the mix here and there. Bring on Mexico and the return of the dark overlord (Loeb)

God drat it. Sebastian Loeb is back in WRC, and is currently leading the Mexico rally. Why couldn't he stay in WRX and be mediocre there. Hope Sordo or Meeke can take it to him. Shows how much of a rally machine he is though. Be gone for 5 years, and then challenge for the win in his first event.

Yup. These past stages has been a bloodbath. Feels like anyone who can keep their car and tires somewhat together can take the win

This super special is like dead men walking lol. Tires are optional

That's a drat shame. He wasn't very good, but he was a real character behind the wheel. That leaves a rather weak driver lineup for Citroen. Although I like both Mads and Craig, they aren't really challenging for wins most of the time. Craig will be the only full time driver that hasn't won a rally and Mads only won in Portugal all the way back in 2012 after Hirvonen ahead of him was disqualified on a technicality. I guess Loeb and the Saudi prince will pop in whenever they feel like it as usual.

Rally Sardinia is going on. There has been some rain mixing things up, and there is a tight fight between Ogier and Neuville in the championship https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCaYAoiy0U8 http://www.wrc.com/en/wrc/livetiming/page/4175----.html

The WRC is back after a summer break with Rally Finland. It should not need much introduction. Massively fast gravel rally with jumps everywhere. Toyota dominated last year, and are probably the favorites this year too. Neuville leads Ogier in the championship, and will look to defend that lead in a rally that hasn't been his best in the past. The first propper stages start friday morning local time. Rally Spain is ongoing. It is the only mixed surface dirt/asphalt rally of the year and is the penultimate round of the championship. There is a pretty close three way fight between Ogier, Neuville and Tanak for the championship. There are also a lot of old familiar faces this rally such as Sebastian Loeb, Petter Solberg, Ken Block and Henning Solberg, https://www.wrc.com/en/wrc/livetiming/page/4175----.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uamuNN2I7lE [Edit] I can add some silly season stuff since I guess a lot of folks doesn't follow rally Ogier and Lappi will be driving for Citroen next year. Citroen not expected to keep any of its drivers except the odd appearance of the sheikh sponsoring the team. Kris Meeke will be back driving for Toyota M-Sport expected to sign Craig Breen Humbug fucked around with this message at 09:32 on Oct 26, 2018 |

Organizers seem to favor removing offending rallies rather than axing categories these days. Poland lost its WRC round due to poor spectator control. not hard to see why when you have videos like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxEtmmte33M Rally Japan will return next year and I believe the organizers want a round in the US as well. Rally Sardinia looks like it will be axed, and I expect they will look at Spain as well to make space in the calendar. I think Spain is one of the better rallies otherwise though. The championship will be super spicy going into the last round if the standings stay like this. Three drivers for three teams on pretty much equal points.

In other news, FIA world rallycross has pretty much collapsed with all manufacturers withdrawing. The factory Ford Hoonigan team left last year, and Peugeot, Audi and Volkswagen have announced they will not be racing in 2019. Olsbergs MSE, the most competitive privateer will only support customers next year too. WRX is set to go fully electric in 2021, so some might come back then. In the meantime, I guess we can expect to se both Loeb and Solberg in rally cars, and the current champ Kristofferson in WTCC or DTM. I wonder if that will have any consequences for the new american rallycross series that has the same organizer as WRX.
