Does anyone know if BAR1 finally got their update package from Multimatic? Also, the Mazdas got an increase in boost across most of the rev range, and a higher redline in the post-roar BoP. They could be pretty speedy come Thursday. I'm gonna keep a watchful eye on the timing site. e: will prototype cars 2, 22, 23, 32, 52, 54, 85, and 90 please report to the stewards for improper Le Mans Prototype livery colors. Allowable major colors are as follows: - Red - White - Black MazeOfTzeentch fucked around with this message at 01:59 on Jan 24, 2018 |

Yeah I learned that at VIR. Road racing you get a whole different experience than watching on TV. Limited insight into happenings on track, but much nicer ear tickling, and really cool things to learn and watch in the paddock. For the Conti and WeatherTech races we were at the oak tree grandstands, which is poo poo for overall race insight, but a lot of teams parked spotters in the crowd to radio the drivers in that area of the track, and we got some really cool info just chatting with them. Really open and friendly guys in the IMSA paddock. e: even the GTLM teams, which I figured would be a bit more secretive, being pro factory efforts, but nah the crew guys are super chill

Aston Martin doesn't do pro GT racing in the US, and Corvette only does Le Mans, it'd be awesome to see them both all over the world all season long

Aston Martin has a pretty rich history, and races at many levels. The CEO, John Hindhaugh, and the side from great British bake off did the 24 hours of COTA with one of their factory drivers in a one off lightly modified Vantage GT8, in the GT4 class. There's a pair of V8 Vantages, one old style GS died, one GT4 spec in Conti as well. Every so often a team drags out their V12 Vantage GT3 at Lime Rock too, but that car is really long in the tooth and isn't really competitive anymore.

A guy in the midweek motorsport group on Facebook did some analysis of the fords and Corvettes, and the corvettes actually had a faster average laptime than the fords, when they were on track. Corvettes spent quite a bit more time in the pits. IIRC one of them changed front brakes twice, once during the fcy near 16h to go, and then once again during green flag running near 8h to go, which kinda killed their chances. Ford has a car that is purpose built for efficient running at high speed tracks like Daytona and Le Mans, so it had to stop less while still maintaining pace. I still think what they did in 2016 was bullshit by sandbagging and bringing out a waiver special before any road cars were even delivered, but the former is on the ACO for not catching it, and the latter is on the other makes for not barring the waiver. I think the same can be said of the BMW, you can't buy any 8-series yet, let alone the M8. We're just less butthurt about it because it's not competitive yet.

Generally, similar amounts of power, GTE cars have more room in the regs for aero (huge diffusers), engine position, no ABS on GTE. I think GTE cars can be wider too.

BMW also had the M6 GTLM which was built to GTE spec but never homologated by the ACO, only IMSA, based on the M6 GT3. They've since replaced that with a fully ACO homologated car, the M8 GTE (which promptly got BoPfucked by IMSA)

Double post for more info: GTE is also a more limited class, as far as allowed specifications. It is more of a build-to-a-spec setup, with engine displacement limits, must be 2 doors with 2 or 2+2 seats in the production model. GT3 is more open, still production based, but more build-to-a-performance standard and then balanced, instead of build-to-a-spec (minus waivers). The Viper GT3 is allowed to have it's 8L V10 by default, and it's balanced into the performance window. The Viper GT2/GTE had to have a waiver (all other makers agree to let it race outside of regulations) to have an engine larger than 5.5L N/A. The Ford GT LM GTE famously was allowed to race on a waiver in 2016, because no street examples had been constructed at the time. The BMW M8 is also on a similar waiver, as there's no 8-series out there in the wild yet. BMW also asked for a waiver to lower the roofline on the M8 GTE to reduce drag and it was denied by at least one competing maker, causing a lengthy late-stage redesign, setting the program back quite a bit.
