I don't have any pictures because the angles aren't great and my phone's camera zoom is worthless, but my local magpie Freckles has been sitting on eggs since Friday. Normally she comes around to my house and sings to get me to come outside to give her some food, but at the moment she can only leave the nest for a short time, so I've been going out to the tree where she's nesting to save her the trip.

When she sees me her head perks up, she hops up to some clearer branches, then swoops down to see me and collect her meatball. As soon as she's wolfed it down she goes straight back to the nest and settles back in on the eggs with the cutest little wiggle :3:

As compensation for the lack of video or pictures of the above, I offer an earlier video of her mate Pancake collecting his Second Breakfast last week:

What about animals that domesticate humans?

My local magpies turn up every morning and sing until I get out of bed and give them breakfast

I love it and it lets me start every day with happy thoughts

My local magpies' eggs are due to hatch any day now, and so I need names!
The mother is Freckles, as she has spots on her face (probably an old injury) and Pancake (he's a bigger pikelet).

Previous chicks were Pikelet in 2021 and Bubble and Squeak in 2022.

Looking for two names that work together as a matched set, as magpies typically lay ~3 eggs and I expect them to be able to raise 2 chicks to fledge and leave the nest

Probably from being found starving on the street.

My local magpie couple are a young male who arrived fresh from leaving his parents territory (so young that he didn't even have full adult male plumage when he fathered his first chick) and an older, more experienced female.
I feed them every time they turn up and sing for me to come outside, and while he will often abandon food unfinished or forget about it, she knows the location of every last morsel that has entered her field of vision and doesn't rest until they've all been eaten.

Here's a video from a couple of months back of him collecting his breakfast (he doesn't like the camera so he's more wary than usual)

Explanation:
I thought I had crossed over into this group's territory so I crouched down to meet them, and one of the babies was really excited and ran up to see me. Except I hadn't crossed the boundary, I was still in the neighbouring group's territory, and one of the neighbouring adults swooped the baby to tell it off as it crossed the line.

I know you've fed Freckles before, does she stay more cautious around folks with the kids in tow?

Freckles and Pancake still land on my front wall and take the meatballs from my hand, then break them up and ferry the pieces to the chicks.

The kids don't follow so closely yet, they'll find a safe vantage point nearby and sit there crying to be fed. As they get older and more confident they'll start following their parents around on the ground as well, and learn how to forage by copying what they do.

As an aside, Pancake learned to take food from my hand after watching Freckles do it first, and it took him a while to work up the courage. She's older and more experienced (and hence more cautious) than him, so she's only comfortable approaching me in certain very safe and familiar areas (like the front wall or my back yard), while Pancake will happily trot up to me if he sees me out and about in the nearby streets.

One of my local magpies' chicks had been missing since yesterday. Last night and this morning I heard an odd cawing that I couldn't locate, this morning I saw the father holding some food in his beak while looking down the exhaust vent from a local cafe's kitchen. I asked the cafe staff, they told me they heard a bird cry out when they turned on the range hood fans that morning, so they left the fans off and were trying to get a hold of their handyman to come and get it out, but he was unavailable.

I phoned the fire brigade office to ask for advice, they sent a truck around right away, and some lovely firemen climbed up on the roof and opened the access panel to let the chick out. Poor little thing took off but was visibly shaken and tired and hungry. Freckles was very pleased to see her chick out and about but had to return to her nest to sit on her new clutch, I scattered some food for it and saw it eat some before I had to leave for an appointment.

Firemen are real heroes

This is in no way blessed. That's a Cassowary.

A giant, angry dinosaur of a bird with a bone mohawk and claws that will gut you crotch to sternum.

Previously they had been confined to Queensland, but if the bastards can swim, who knows where they'll go next?

There are two reliably documented cases of cassowaries killing humans:

quote:

The first documented human death caused by a cassowary was on April 6, 1926. In Australia, 16-year-old Phillip McClean and his brother, age 13, came across a cassowary on their property and decided to try to kill it by striking it with clubs. The bird kicked the younger boy, who fell and ran away as his older brother struck the bird. The older McClean then tripped and fell to the ground. While he was on the ground, the cassowary kicked him in the neck, opening a 1.25-centimetre (0.49 in) wound that severed his jugular vein. The boy died of his injuries shortly thereafter.

quote:

Another human death due to a cassowary was recorded in Florida on April 12, 2019. The bird's owner, a 75-year-old man who had raised the animal, was apparently clawed to death after he fell to the ground.

So, don't be an rear end in a top hat or a Floridian and you'll be fine

When they were planning this video the director asked for a cost estimate of building a set on a hydraulic floor so it could tilt and make everything slide around, and after they were told it would cost a quarter of a million pounds one of the crew said "why not just put it on wheels?"

So you've got the director shouting out "NORTH! NORTH! EAST! WEST! STOP! TURN!" over a megaphone to a dozen sweating stagehands as they push it around while Jay Kay dances and lipsyncs inside

Shocking amounts of turkey defenders in this thread. Garbage rear end bird, doesn't even taste good unless you literally soak it in oil.

(I actually don't hate turkeys that much I just find it funny and stupid when people treat pests as if they are rare exotic animals to be treasured. That said I also find it hilarious that modern society is effectively unable to deal with them invading urban / suburban spaces because guns are no longer an option in a city, and boy HOWDY that should not be taken as an argument to be able to shoot guns in cities, I just laugh because 200 years ago a turkey walking into your front yard would have been a delightful "hey dinner came to us" moment).

Anyway I posted without realizing this was the blessed thread, definitely not the place for such arguments. Sorry about that, please continue with blessed pics/videos.
