Does anyone have pro tips for flying to Gen Con? We've always driven, but we're moving across the country this year and will have to fly to get to Gen Con. In particular, how do people handle buying big items? Do you just ship it back? Pack light and have some way of putting it in your suitcase while preventing baggage handlers from molesting your bag and dinging up your nice new stuff? Take your haul as carry-on? Employ quantum teleportation?

I've flown in twice, and my Lifehack(tm) is to have a duffel bag rolled up in my carry-on, and then just check my bag filled with nerd poo poo on the return trip. Checked-bag fees < Postage fees (especially considering the Convention Price Hike)

That's not a bad idea, especially since I flew enough last year that I have status on Delta, so we'll get a free checked bag each. Maybe if I just wrap shirts and stuff around my precious board game boxes, they won't get dinged up by the baggage handlers.

What's all this then? I hadn't heard that. Granted, the only "WotC" stuff I do at Gen Con is one AD&D 1e (or 2e) game a year, so it won't affect me like at all, but I do like hearing about scuttlebutt.

Does that mean they're slowly moving towards a D&D4e clone? :newlol:

As long as they still have the unbelievably embarrassing summaries of the bands that are playing, I'll be ok.

I got like 5000th in line because the site timed out when I clicked the button, but crisis averted, I got into 2 Super Robo Rally events after they opened up a bit later.

How do returns work? There's an event or two I want to jump on if people drop them and I'd have to drop some things myself to fit them in. Is there a way to get notified if a slot opens in an event?

edit: also a few events don't have a location set yet, what's with that?

If you go to My Transactions, you can refund tickets for system credit. I don't think there's a way of getting notifications though, unless you just reload your wishlist page periodically (or have a computer thing do that for you).

Dammit man I stopped reading the incel thread here for a reason.

For serious, I noticed that spending a nonzero amount of my free time reading about truly lovely people just made me feel worse in general.

There's something about the puppet program that I just find vaguely creepy. Maybe because it's too close to clowns.

Yeah, I got mine yesterday and had a brief moment of panic when I saw how few event tickets I had. Then I realized that they're moving towards scanning your badge for some events. (I know Super Robo Rally is doing that this year, and they're the most important event of Gen Con by far.)

I know people have mentioned lots of good food places, but are there any recommendations for some that are at least reasonably healthy? I'm sure I'll eat plenty of sugary, fried stuff too, but it'd be nice to have some options for when I don't want to punish my stomach.

This looks like a solid pick for when we arrive since it's super close and also we'll be feeling bad since we're doing a red-eye flight (I am not happy about this part). Ethiopian sounds good (I used to live down the street from an Ethiopian place), but a 30 minute walk might be pushing it. I could use that time to do a thing! I guess I could grab a cab or whatever though.

Ok that's a lot less bad than how I read your previous post. I thought you'd already arrived and were considering another round trip to get your tickets and I was like "that is some serious Gen Con dedication".

Gen Con was fun, although I'll say this was probably the worst time I've had of all the times I went. It had nothing to do with the convention itself though. More that we had to take a red-eye flight in (we used to drive in, but moved far away), so we ended up too tired to do some of the events we had tickets for; and then had to get a backup hotel that forced us to pack up all our stuff to change rooms partway through (and then they gave us our same room back after all that).

Still, I got some cool stuff that I mailed back to myself (maybe next year I'll just take a second suitcase so I can do it myself) and I got to play Super Robo Rally twice. It's now to the point where the SRR organizers know us by name.
