In UK news: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/30/ukgov_mass_data_slurping_ruled_illegal_again/

quote:

The government has already been forced to admit that chunks of the Investigatory Powers Act are illegal, issuing a set of amendments it hoped would plaster over the faults and bring it into line.

But Liberty described these as “half-baked plans [that] do not even fully comply with past court rulings requiring mandatory safeguards” - even without today’s decision.

well you're better off buying the still Z80 powered TI-84 Plus models since their onboard USB works as a host port as well, so that you can attach hard drives or even a modem/ethernet card if you care to.

http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/71/7116.html

quote:

VT100 Terminal program. Use with an external modem to get Internet access from your TI 83 by dialing into a Unix shell. Requires an Official TI Graphlink cable. Not all external modems are compatible with the Graphlink.

quote:

-----------------
How do I work it?
-----------------
First off, send TELNET.83G into your calculator and run the program TELNET.
A screen will come up displaying a few lines of help and my name at the top.
You will see a flashing cursor at the bottom of the screen. If you are using
a shell (Ashell or SOS) then choose ZTELNET from the list. You may also want
to delete the programs TELNET and ZASMLOAD since you won't be using these if
you have a shell.

You can use the arrow keys on the TI-83 to pan your view around. Remember
that if the cursor goes off the edge of the screen that you may need to pan
the screen down to see what is coming in. Whenever you pan the screen, a
minimap will appear in the lower right corner so that you know where you are
in relation to the entire 80x25 screen (you can only see 24x10 at a time).
Press the [GRAPH] key to quit the program. For information on what the rest
of the keys do, refer the key chart later in this file.

Now, plug one end of a TI-Graphlink into the TI-83 and the other end of it
into a null-modem cable. Then, plug the null-modem cable into an external
modem. Remember that you MUST have a null-modem cable. Also, you may need
size/gender changers to make it plug into the modem properly.

Refer to your modem's user manual about how to operate the modem from a
terminal. If the modem is connected to a wall jack or cellular phone, then
you can dial out. You operate the modem the same exact way you would as if
you were using a PC terminal program.

Try typing AT and press enter (only if you are connected to a modem) and
see if the word OK appears. If so, then you know you're in business.
