This is Sendlinger Tor, a fairly busy intersection in Munich

Every day for two years i rode my bike from the right sidewalk on the south, then had to cross over between several lanes of car traffic, right in front of a trolley line, in order to continue north

not once in two years did i ever feel unsafe, or get hit by a car, or bothered by car traffic, whatsoever. It was painless and enjoyable

Anyone who says that bikes “can’t properly negotiate traffic with other vehicles” or whatever has never left their house, ever

It is 100% a function of culture: drivers and bikers who are willing to share the road and have a vested interest in the safety of anyone in any vehicle

Decrying bikes as some kind of rich white man’s folly is absurd the moment you step foot in any modern Western European city

It’s just a joke

and yes collisions and deaths occur, even in cities like Munich

but instead of blaming “bikers” or “drivers” as a group (instead of finding fault on a case-by-case basis), the laws are changed to make violations more serious, including the ability to take away the drivers license of those involved, even those on a bike

it’s just... common sense.
