It's hard to appreciate to what extent drug dealers, gangs, and drug violence were the big bad guy in the late 80s and 90s. poo poo, even videogames and hollywood movies were all about evil drug dealers.

FrozenVent posted:Honoraris causae degrees get handed out like candy to anybody who might make a sizeable donation to the university, or bring publicity. James Doohan (Scotty from original Star Trek) had an honorary Engineering degree, which sounds like the usual ho-hum sort of celebrity thing until you hear about how the idea actually came about. It's kind of sweet. Apparently the university did a survey of engineering students, asking what their influences were. Some staggeringly high percentage of engineering students listed "Mr. Scott from Star Trek" as a huge reason they got into engineering, and the U figured that since they apparently had the guy to thank for all these people enrolling, the least they could do is award him an honorary degree in return.

In a perfect world this would all help people realize that in political matters there are no permanent friends, only permanent interests & they'd shy away from the right-feeling but obviously ridiculous my team can do no wrong vs your team thing.
