"That's a huge chunk of level back there that I think most people unnecessarily play through because they were dumb enough to trust the game..."

That pretty much sums sup Sonic '06. The level design itself doesn't seem awful, nothing that could have been polished by another six months of game development. The worst thing that isn't glitchy seems to be the high hp enemies, which break the flow of feeling like a speedy badass. The story is still dumb, but there are lots of games that people still enjoy playing because the actual gameplay is fun even if the characters and plot are lousy.

It's sad to see Knuckles being so broken that it's dangerous to use his wall climb ability, because jumping off is so glitchy. I played a bunch of Sonic Adventure 2 and wall climbing and gliding around the whole map as Knuckles was a blast.

Yeah the Silver boss fight seems really easy once you understand that your basic attack must never, ever be used.

I like a level set up so that more skilled or knowledgeable players can find faster routes or extra goodies if they know where to go.

I saw the end of the mach speed section had an invincibility item, which seems rather pointless because it looks like the most dangerous thing about that section was avoiding jumping off into the abyss. Is there any way to "ground" yourself, or is it all freehand stick control? I remember later Sonic games let you quickly adjust your positioning with the shoulder buttons, but this looks like the most you hope for controlling trajectory is to ring dash. The mach speed section designs are just bizarre. The way they are so woefully unpolished and how they force you to beat the level each time before tackling the mach speed part is eerily similar to gameplay "walls" some older videogames had for the explicit purpose of making sure kids would have to rent the videogame more than once to get enough practice to beat the level.

Agree. I don't see the point in playing something you actively think you'll dislike, unless you're trying to prove yourself wrong.
I think, in the pokecapn LP at least, he was trying to prove people wrong because people have always said 3D Sonic games were rear end, broken, etc. Princess Elise was cringe but surely people were overblowing it with how bad Sonic 2006 was. He expected it to be mediocre, and was unprepared for what a trainwreck it was and add the long loading times, beating the game in one sitting was an absolute nightmare.

Jesus. Why did the camera spaz out when Shadow landed on the ground after the train jump section? Or was that you fiddling with the camera?

If that's true it's a bit fitting the time traveler requires the most tries in order to get the best outcome.

So this was the demo stage before the game came out. Were any notable changes made between the demo and the release of the game? Did the demo include the mach speed section?

I don't know if it's the bubble but it really bugs me how underwater-slow Sonic looks when he's sliding around. I can't tell if that's just how Sonic moves, or if the frame rate is just that bad. If this level was supposed to be the crown jewel of the game, the fights should go a lot faster. And you're right, it sorely lacks any shortcuts or tricks to maximize your performance the way having full knowledge of a level should allow players. The only tricks seem to be glitches, rather than rewards for good player performance.

"Oh thank god we're almost to the mach speed segment." I think you're the first person to ever say that.

The bald eagles also feel out of place and too slow transportation. If this were another game, I'd suspect they were trying to hide load times with it but they do an abysmal job with load times anyway.

Yup, that's him. Supposedtly the issue of the comic that the sega executive saw that resulted in him getting canned was from the arc where Sally was getting married to another man. So the cover was sonic openly weeping in the rain, clutching the wedding invite.
He got canned over one issue? Or was that just the issue that had them take a look at what else the comic was up to, and it was terrible?

I want to know what the heck they were thinking with Tails' "ring bombs". I think they even make the sound you make when you get hit, and your actual dropped rings get all mixed up with theirs.

I realize science sometimes has its duds, but, Tails, buddy, that one was all downside. What were you even thinking?
The only possible explanation I can come up with is that they ran out of time to properly animate an attack for Tails so they just used a ring box and rings for it as a placeholder and then forgot THAT was what their placeholder was. Because they should have realized that using almost any other thing would have been better. Spraying a bunch of fake rings everywhere in a game where collecting rings is tied to both mission points and staying the gently caress alive is beyond idiotic.

to be fair i would be really loving confused if i were them, too; people send a lot of mixed messages
I wouldn't be surprised if they had someone in charge of keeping track how much furry porn a new character design is going to generate.

I will always posit that Sonic Unleashed combat sections would have been 1000% better with Knuckles playable instead of the werehog, speaking of combat in Sonic games.
Knuckles wasn't even in Unleashed, was he? I would say Sega was so terrified of filling Sonic games with other characters that they reeled it back too much, so that's why there's only Tails, a bit of Amy, and motherfucking Chip.

I think Unleashed was pushed for a Wii release, too. But they had to cut content for that like Empire City. The Wii version just doesn't have that level. So it might have been even worse if people realized you had a to play certain versions of the game to have access to all the characters.

I really liked Shadow as a little kid because he stayed tough even though a lot of bad stuff had happened to him and yeah he was surly and angry but he wasn't weepy and he could move on. Apparently Shadow was really popular? Popular enough for Sega to keep using him to the point of giving him his own game!
