This is a good grounds for discussion. I think the late 1800s and early 1900s are an interesting era to look at because of the rise of eugenics in the U.S., and how that influenced immigration quotas by region (among other things, some of which are still present with us today). I'll see if I can post a bit more on it later. There's a lot to branch out into, too, given that this discussion will naturally look into the evolving definition of whiteness, regional differences, sanctuary cities, and lot of other things.
