Mind you it's the same all down the country. Because of the (pretty dubious) school of hard knocks credentials that come with being a "real northerner", half the people in any given northern county think the people in the county south of them aren't northern, and people who really are from the midlands affect a little northern-ness when they feel they can get away with it. I've definitely met people from Birmingham or Stoke-on-Trent who will talk the northerner game now and then.

That said, Leeds, Yorkshire, Liverpool, Manchester, they're all inarguably northern. Lancashire and Merseyside are both in the region officially termed by the government "North West England". If you can stick your leg to the left and it lands you in the sea instead of in Wales, you're northern.

I mean, I am sympathetic because Northumberland and County Durham do have it worse off and get less government attention and funding than places like Liverpool or Manchester do. But that's not the same as the latter places not actually being northern.

Like I said, if your local train station is managed by Northern, you're almost certainly in the North.

AIUI, the only Northern stations that aren't firmly in the North are the ones on the Cleethorpes line (soon to be transferred to East Midlands), some stations in the Hope Valley, and Dronfield (which is a suburb of Sheffield anyway).
