scott zoloft posted:I don't understand you sorts of "what do you have to hide" people I get that mentality and follow it in most things, but google searches seem so meaningless and innocent I just can't make myself worry about it. I guess that's me falling into their trap though. Google is gonna go all cyberpunk on my rear end with the knowledge that I like music and video games.

scott zoloft posted:I don't understand you sorts of "what do you have to hide" people There's no point in using a lovely US-based search engine when your browser, OS, and/or ISP are already tracking everything. If you do take all the proper steps to be anonymous for whatever reason then you can just use google anyway.

IMO even if (in my case google and MS) you can't disconnect completely from having your info aggregated into a usage profile, personal or otherwise, it doesn't mean don't bother trying to limit what they get starting now or in the future.

I'm starting to hate that Google gives me results I'm not interested in because the algorithm thinks I misspelled a word.

if google paid me for every search i made and captcha i filled i would probably use their software but if something better exists then they should have to work for it at least a little bit you need to be gassed if you don't value data

Someone told me that http://epicsearch.in is the only true private search engine although the few times I tried it wasn’t very satisfactory.

Been using DDG for a while, but thinking about going further down this rabbit hole. I'm sure really, you could go full on Tor and Mailinabox, but there are other options for less tech savvy people, like KolabNow and ProtonMail, I'd be interested in some Goon recommendations for alternatives to Gmail, Google Maps, and so on. I wouldn't mind spending a little bit for a privacy respecting encrypted email provider. Maybe a more detailed discussion on this subject is more suited to SHSC, but I couldn't find anything there, and I'm certainly not knowledgeable enough to start a thread on it.

Getting a new privacy respecting email is something ive thought about forever, but the thought of transferring everything over makes it a nonstarter for me. How many places let you easily change your email when its part of your login credentials?
