She's lookin' pretty good, that 1 pip means Ashoka's goona be rocking at least 3 dodges and 2 aims (assuming to staple offensive push to her, which you should), for a likely 9 hits. Even other Jedi are going to feel that.

Both questions for your local 3D printer I guess.

Looks like my local shop is going to start a escalation league so I've picked up the Rebels v Empire core set. Would either of those be better than the other for an intro into Legion? Also, any tips for next buys for either faction so I can start planning where to go after the early weeks?

Pick the side that you like the theme of more and choose that one. Neither have any army wide rules like the Separatists or GAR.

Also how do you feel about painting mostly white? This is important.

Braggo

I'm very new to the hobby and haven't actually painted anything white yet! I hear it's pretty terrible but I do have the Pro-Acryl white that is apparently decent? Maybe Rebels would be a better starting point...

White is very frustrating because mistakes are super obvious. It's probably best to try painting your Rebels first so you can get a feel for painting and then switch to the Empire. That said, for gaming purposes I doubt people care much if you show up with bare plastic.

I joke. It honestly isn’t that bad. Just try some variations and find which one you like best. I’ve done white contrast, white with a black wash and drybrush white, white with black wash then highlighted in white. All make perfectly serviceable tabletop standards. Just depends on how much time you want to spend on each one.

I did some really decent 20 minute squads with nothing more than white primer and white and black contrast paint. I guess I did go back over the lenses with gloss for a pop there.

Yeah, the biggest problem with picking a faction is it's Star Wars so they're all pretty cool/nostalgic. I did figure I'd rather have Empire or Rebel vs Republic/Separatist.

Good to know white primer and contrast can be serviceable. I'm going to have to be good with minis looking ok as opposed to masterpieces for quite some time I'm sure.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised, even looking between squads how fast/how far you come along.

Ahsoka is pretty fun, a budget Operative Luke that gets unique when you pair her with a good source of dodges.
Hopefully coming points update touches Sabine and Clan Wren - they are natural additions to Ahsoka list, but are a bit expensive at the moment.

I played Ahsoka and Cassian together and they pair up nicely. Cassian's cards are pretty great for her.

I think she's slightly better than Luke outside of the Son of Skywalker turn, Jar'kai does wonders for fixing bad rolls.

So the card "I am no Jedi" gives her agile 1. This means everytime she takes a standard move that turn, she gains 1 dodge token. She also has defend 1, which gives her a dodge when you assign her the order with the card. She has charge, so you should be moving twice before attacking in meele, for a total of 3 dodges. (Probably one more if you activate a commander first and hit her with take cover).

You're also going to take offensive push as one of your 2 training upgrades ( the other is likely tenacity) which gives you tactical 1, like agile but aim tokens instead.

The card then gives you up to 3 extra white dice per token when making your attack pool (tenacity adds a red die if you're wounded too), meaning you're rolling 2-3 red, 2 black, and 5 white with 2 aim tokens, and 3-4 dodge tokens. Jar'kai mastery lets you spend dodge tokens to convert misses to hits, or hits to get Crits.

Just a note that offensive push only works for one move, so one aim token.

I was going to argue it, then I found an AMG rules forum post saying the exact thing as you.

Which leads me into another question: if you’ve got Tactical 1 on your card (Rex, ARC troopers), do you get Tactical 1 on both moves? Since it’s on your unit card and not a thing you exhausted a card to get?

e: this is the best use I’ve found for ARCs, as a strike team to farm out aim tokens :v:

Cool, wanted to make sure. Like I said, that’s the best use I’ve seen for ARCs…but Rex does the same, can shoot twice via gunslinger, and (if you play the right card) have fire support on both shots and crush 2 of your opponent’s activations :getin:

Even a strike team of ARCs clocks in near what a basic Phase II squad would cost, and the Phase II squad can fire support/generate surge tokens just for existing.

Yeah Tactical X triggers as many times as you do a standard move action, but Offensive Push specifically only works for the duration of a single move.

Jyn is fun, but fairly mid. Leia suffers from being twice the cost of the generic officer while being nearly the same, but it's still playable.

Han is pretty good, especially against red saves. If you fight a lot of Republic you can reliably pop 3-4 dudes a turn, and he has great command cards. Pairs really well with Chewie, who himself pairs well with anything you want protected.

I think Lando is pretty bad, except that one of his cards hands out a standby, which is really good for Luke or Ashoka.

Speaking of Ashoka, I took her out for a test drive today. She's loving nuts. One game she one shot Rex on her 1-pip turn, followed by killing an At-Rt the next turn. Jar-kai mastery combined with rebel dodge token gen is extremely effective

fatherboxx
Mar 25, 2013

Jyn is great just for having base 3 courage. Teamwork card can do a nutso chain of tokens with Han+Chewie or Cassian+K2so

Lando is good for reliably killing at least one red save trooper per activation at range 3 and contigencies lets you bring additional cards of heroes that have more than 3 (Boba, Luke). 2pip that gives standby is great if you have bus in your list.

Chewie is usually used as a big bag of wounds that you use to Guardian your gunline generic guys. He is ok.

Rebels are considered subpar right now except for 2 airspeeder echobase lists because the meta is turbofucked by Dark Troopers and a lot of Rebel heroes are straight up useless against them; low amount of native impact in various units doesn't help.

Braggo

Before I get to painting, am I going to have less fun playing in an escalation league with rebels while I’m learning? Or are they considered subpar by tournament goers who know what they’re doing so it won’t be a big deal while learning?

Any recommendations for what to buy post core set for either Rebels or Empire seeing how I’ll have to get moving to keep up with the points increases every few weeks?

StashAugustine

Rebels are absolutely playable, their main problem is more that at high level play they're a bit anemic for cost and both lack any stupidly broken lists and don't do well into a lot of the current stupid broken lists. I'd say the more relevant thing for a new player is that Rebels are very finesse driven- their units pack a punch offensively but their defense, at best, requires careful handling. This can be a little frustrating, but it also teaches you to play well- if you misplaced a unit then it will probably die, so you gotta learn to play them right. As for what to buy, if you've got the cash Echo Base Defenders gets you a ton of veterans, probably the most efficient corps right now, as well as some other good units. Commandos are also good, both for strike teams and their actual full units; and a specialist pack has generic officer. Beyond that I'd say it more depends on what kinda stuff you want to play

I'm working on Hoth / Echo Base Rebels right now. They aren't fully painted, but they're coming along; I've got a lot of work to do, plus basing:

I also got a few more weapons teams and another Snowspeeder.

If you do go with Echo Base Rebels there are some really good 3D Printed models out there. I bought two sets of these eBay Link, and I can't recommend them enough. They're good, detailed models and they help break up the army so you don't have just the same poses over and over.

Overall balance is still good once you remove the capital "P" Problems of Darktroopers and Blizzard Force. I hadn't played anything competitive until this past weekend and that poo poo is shifting the meta in a dramatic way and pretty heavily masking everything else otherwise being in good shape. Darktroopers are just exhausting to go against and they so fundamentally disregard a lot of the strategic elements of the game that I'm not sure how you even fix them with points changes. The general consensus with Blizzard Force seems to at least be just banning operative Vader.

Hipster Occultist

I don't even know how Darks got released as is. A fully upgraded squad is 215 (220 with the program upgrade), whereas a fully upgraded At-ST is around 188.

You get one more wound, better attack pools, a lower profile that's easier to hide, red saves, and what else am I forgetting?

Ah yes, two loving activations.

For like +25 points

Gumdrop Larry
Jul 30, 2006

I knew they were pushed, but again having not done anything competitive in a while I was still shocked at how much trouble I had just even beginning to try and figure them out. Focused fire even with moderate amounts of crits and impact still does next to nothing due to red saves and people running them with IRG to bubble wrap them a little via guardian. Positioning has no meaning because they're full armor and don't care about cover. Similarly, no suppression means you're thinking purely about firing for raw damage instead of denying actions, which takes you back to step 1 where you're probably not gonna accomplish anything anyway. Double activations per rounds goes an even comical step further into just throwing a wrench into the otherwise game-defining decisions of thinking about activated versus unactivated, how much suppression and action denial can you cause; None of it matters at all.

I'd have to imagine maybe they slipped by on first glance simplicity. They're just big dumb brick walls that you don't parse how impenetrable they are on top of their insane value until they're on the table getting handed a bunch of green tokens and protected by the rest of the army.

fatherboxx
Mar 25, 2013

Well, with their design you see how they were hit in development with plodding and unconcerned and speed and high additional dude cost and that was still not enough because full armor and two acts on a unit that can score any mission is just too good.

StashAugustine
Mar 24, 2013

Do not trust in hope- it will betray you! Only faith and hatred sustain.

Yeah they're a combination of different issues. Just on pure offense/defense profile their defense is a bit better than most other armor, though there's a few pros and cons (no cover, can't be repaired, and they lose models, but theyre easier to hide, can be guardianed, and don't take vehicle damage), and their offense is much better but requires range 3 and really 2 to be effective. They're also slower than most tanks iirc, even double moving. But then they activate twice a turn which both makes their offense so much better and means you can slack on padding activations (meaning they're effectively cheaper) and then they can do objectives to boot. They really just shouldn't have the double activation gimmick, but it's probably too late to fix that now. Adding guardian to the things you can't do with unconcerned is probably a gimme (though idk if were getting rules changes or errata this update), and honestly I think they could probably just lose one of their heavy slots if you wanna hit them hard. It seems like 2 dark troopers with 2 heavies each is the sweet spot and maybe they just didn't settle there during testing
