Looks like my local shop is going to start a escalation league so I've picked up the Rebels v Empire core set. Would either of those be better than the other for an intro into Legion? Also, any tips for next buys for either faction so I can start planning where to go after the early weeks?

I'm very new to the hobby and haven't actually painted anything white yet! I hear it's pretty terrible but I do have the Pro-Acryl white that is apparently decent? Maybe Rebels would be a better starting point...

Yeah, the biggest problem with picking a faction is it's Star Wars so they're all pretty cool/nostalgic. I did figure I'd rather have Empire or Rebel vs Republic/Separatist.

Good to know white primer and contrast can be serviceable. I'm going to have to be good with minis looking ok as opposed to masterpieces for quite some time I'm sure.

Before I get to painting, am I going to have less fun playing in an escalation league with rebels while I’m learning? Or are they considered subpar by tournament goers who know what they’re doing so it won’t be a big deal while learning?

Any recommendations for what to buy post core set for either Rebels or Empire seeing how I’ll have to get moving to keep up with the points increases every few weeks?

Rebels are absolutely playable, their main problem is more that at high level play they're a bit anemic for cost and both lack any stupidly broken lists and don't do well into a lot of the current stupid broken lists. I'd say the more relevant thing for a new player is that Rebels are very finesse driven- their units pack a punch offensively but their defense, at best, requires careful handling. This can be a little frustrating, but it also teaches you to play well- if you misplaced a unit then it will probably die, so you gotta learn to play them right. As for what to buy, if you've got the cash Echo Base Defenders gets you a ton of veterans, probably the most efficient corps right now, as well as some other good units. Commandos are also good, both for strike teams and their actual full units; and a specialist pack has generic officer. Beyond that I'd say it more depends on what kinda stuff you want to play

Great, I'll stick with Rebels then and keep their fragility in mind. I'll dig around and try and find an Echo Base Defenders set, looks like they're kind of hard to get a hold of at the moment. Appreciate it!

I went to a local hobby store and turns out they had a box of Echo Base Defenders so I've decided to go that direction with my escalation list. I picked up Han and an Airspeeder too. Are there any sources for up to date lists so I can get an idea of what to be looking at?

Had my first round of an escalation league yesterday.

Leia and the Echo Base Defenders

took on Gar Saxon and some mandos backed up by a few units of Black Sun Enforcers.

We played key positions. I think he was kind of screwed by a piece of terrain on his side of the board stretching into his deployment zone so he said he couldn't put his objective there. This was my first game and he said he hasn't played much either so maybe this shouldn't have happened? Either way, I was able to push up to the middle ahead of my opponent and hunker down there with some veterans and Leia (who dropped back to my home objective at the end) while running tauntauns over to his objective to harass him from that side as well.

Someone else who was at the shop let him know he couldn't get the courage bonus from Gar Saxon for his BSE so I was able to focus on them to drop their actions down. It was great and I'm looking forward to adding to my force. Thinking about adding another Mk 2 emplacement trooper and another unit of tauntauns to bring me up to ~500pts.

Nice, sounds like a fun game! Tauns are a great harassment unit. That panic on the black suns is correct but a more experienced player will usually counteract it (take a vigo either as it's own unit or an upgrade). The board does look a little sparse (that center looks like a killing field) and once you get more experience it's nice to sanity check the terrain to make sure no deployments will just get screwed. Having a fair amount of little pieces is nice just to make sure there's something of a fallback.

We counted the middle one as light cover but I didn't really know how much terrain there should be and I guess he didn't really either. We were playing on a smaller 3x3 board for the lower point round but apparently this was one of the rare occasions there was no one playing Legion on a Sunday afternoon when we were setting up so hopefully there will be more folks around next time.

I was planning on getting Chewy in my list at some point but I was originally thinking a second unit of tauns would be where I wanted to go next but maybe adding Chewy now would be better? Also, if I have 24pts left before getting to 500 is there one of the unit add ons to vets that would be better than the others? I'm looking at a med droid, rebel officer or another vet.

edit: Actually realized I can drop Strict Orders and fit another heavy vet in. Here's what I'm currently thinking.
