There are two types of FTL players: Those who think unlocking new ships will make the game easier and Those who are smarter than that.

This game will appeal highly to those that hit a wall trying to just unlock new ships. The game frontloads everything into the team creation at the beginning of every game and succeeding in accomplishing achievements will add to your toolbox. You can also choose which unlocks you get as achievements give you coins to spend on those unlocks. This is a lot looser than specifics unlocks being tied to specific achievements and goals from FTL.

Like FTL, however, these tools are all sidegrades and you're fooling yourself if you think you're going to make the game easier with them though you might come across some abilities that click with your way of thinking.

I'm waiting to see how replayable this is before picking it up. FTL is something I played when it first came out and I am still playing now. I'm hoping Into The Breach is like that.

There seems to be quite a lot of replay value in there. I've had to restart numerous times because I'm terrible at the game, and the game always shuffles objectives and maps around, so whereas in one game on Map A your objective might be to protect two ancient tanks, on the next go around you might need to kill seven enemies and break two mountains or something. Enemy loadouts also seem to vary from playthrough to playthrough.

And of course you have a buttload of different mech types, pilots and weapons to combine.

I don't know if it'll be as replayable as FTL (probably not, but what the hell is?) but you'll probably get a lot of value out of Into the Breach, even before modders inevitably dig their claws into it.

Unlocks seem to happen fast. I only need three more teams to unlock everything.

Game is a ton of fun. Not sure what happened to the last four hours.

Difficulty seems tuned pretty well, so far I like the smoke team (beat it on normal first try) and hate the railgun/shields team (can't get past a single island). Anyone else have luck with them?

After lunch I'm looking forward to trying some of the other options.

I think the only thing that will keep this game from having more replayability than FTL is FTL's, hilariously enough, RNG.

Who knows, I'm a few hours into this, my thoughts will change.

I got through the first two islands with loads of power a bunch of times but lost on the last mission a couple times and then tried to go onto the robot island as my third instead, lost even harder there. The robots are really loving savage. Decided to knock it down to easy for one go to get a few more coins easily and unlock some more options. Now I have 6 different squads to play with, some of them are loving weird. The one with the lightning whips feels like a completely different game.

So this game is like FTL in terms of difficulty settings, right? Where "Easy" is moderately hard, "Normal" is really hard, and "Hard" is "please violate me through every available orifice" difficult, right

Uh... Kupo?

Pretty much yeah. This game is really really great. And honestly pretty fuckin' hard. In a good way. It's your ineptitude that kills you, not lovely RNG/roguelike junk (most of the time).

Also, the team that poops out smoke and electrifies it is objectively the best.

Big fan of just smoking these idiot bugs.

I spent my rent money on tentacle porn.
Beat it with the junker crew and a custom crew of 3 big boy bullies who just punched real hard (ideally into holes). Real fun. Looking forward to seeing how all the other teams play.

Though it's weird being able to "complete" the game whenever you want. I did the full 4 islands with the punch-bots and went straight to the end with the junkers and just smogged up the entire screen and won (with a bit of luck).

The guy who lets you move again after attacking is fantastic with the (I agree very powerful) fogmechs.

Stick him in the shielded pusher and laugh all the way to the bank.

he also gets +1 reactor so you can shield up right out of the gate

This game is a RUSH.

It's certainly easier in FTL, in terms of how easy it is to get a win on Normal, although this has the caveat that I'm not blind in the sense that during development I went over the available videos of gameplay a few times, so I was already pretty familiar with the basics. The Rift Walkers default squad seems pretty strong, at least in the sense that they're easy to get the hang of. I'm happy that I started in Normal, whereas with FTL I happily started on Easy (and lost quite a few times before getting the hang of the game).

I'm really impressed so far with how they've balanced mission selection. There's a clear risk/reward going on since you are ultimately driven to to seek reputation (star) rewards to afford more stuff, but taking 'High Threat' missions makes it fairly likely that you will some grid damage if you pursue the objectives at all costs, at least at my skill level. Taking an easier mission often seems to make sense, both in reducing the risk that you will have to give up the 'Perfect Island' prize, and in increasing your grid margin or error.

Once you get good at not making mistakes (or at least not making mistakes that you can't recognize and rewind from more than once per mission) here's some real depth to weighing between similar options, since having good positioning for the next turn is something that's hard to just brute-force. I feel like I'm still a raw beginner when it comes to choosing good positions at the start of a map, and a couple of times my placements made the first turn or two really unpleasant.

The difficulty seems really well-tuned to me (so far), given that one extra enemy usually turns an easy turn into a complicated turn, or an involved turn into a selection from several bad options. Sometimes the random AI makes pretty silly moves, such as walking right into death squares, but given how you're often outnumbered it's good for the pacing to have a few turns/missions where everything isn't turned up to 11.

Some of the achievements look pretty crazy to me, but I guess that if worse comes to worst, almost all of them can be farmed by playing on Easy if you're desperate for completion. Some of them look a bit nuts, like beating the game without spending reputation with a random squad.

beat the game with blitz.

i think breach is shorter than ftl. like if you beat the game 8x times your pretty much done with it contend wise. (if you unlock character each time you beat the game).
each playtrough will feel different but it wont be ftl level of replayability (100-1000 replay's). It is however fun, and who knows maybe dev's will expand it in the future.

Loving the game but HOLY poo poo, gently caress YOU RNG!

First turn both my Charge Tank and Lazer Mech had the tiles they spawned on become hazard tiles for the lightning storm. Which wasn't so bad except they both got webbed.

Edit: And no, the shields don't protect against lightning. I tried.

Edit 2: So if you lose all units on the field the campaign goes on. However the remaining but turns auto-complete. Somehow I only lost one power due to that.

Actually won my first game on my first try! :woop: It was on Easy, but still, I expected FTL level fuckery, and a couple times I got it, so I'm still happy.

Though I gotta say victory was thanks to this unbelievably tanky spawn-blocking rear end in a top hat in a Prime mech just dashing everywhere for 2 (eventually 4) damage and a knockback, then walking on top of a spawn point

Still won :smug:

I had enough cores I had upgraded my vehicles to hell and back already so I wasn't too crippled (missed that extra HP, move and reactor though). Shield-bot gets so little XP I got literally nothing from him. Literally the opposite of Laser Mech which might as well be named "MURDER BOT". It doesn't move the enemy at all because it put all of its talent points in "KILL WITH LASER" and it works out very, very well.

Not sure if it was unintentional, but once I lost my pilots my Laser Mech lost Ally Immunity for its laser. I'd say it was a bug, but the gun I put on Charge Tank (one shot forward and backwards) went from bouncing off to doing damage. Also I found it hilarious the A.I. Autopilots do the same teleport out as the crew.

Okay that is a legit case of RNG loving you over, drat. Buuuuuuut you shouldn't deploy your units in range of webbing enemies unless you can deal with being webbed. The formation you land in is actually extremely crucial to your success and it's a decision you can never rewind so think carefully about all possible opening moves the vek can make!

Noticed some interesting pilot changes:

Gana and Abe's abilities were swapped ie Abe used to get the aggressive deployment without a power cost
Isaac Jones got way better, he used to freeze a water tile if he ended movement on it
Good ol' Harold used to heal from burning, but the push is pretty good too!
I think Archimedes used to be restricted to 1 tile of movement after shooting but it cost no power?

Anyone developed a rubric yet for how many islands to go for before going to the volcano? I just decided to go after 3 because I'd just gotten a massive amount of reactor cores and my grid was fully charged, so I figured why chance victory on the 4th island (which I haven't seen yet)?

Perfect Island bonuses are sooooo nice.

e: why are people calling them the 'fog dorks'. you gotta go with the canon name, the Smoky Boys (as dubbed by Tom Francis).

e2: I think the thing with deciding how many islands to do is only like half a strategic decision and half a matter of taste (if you rather would be wrapped up sooner, or if you like things turned up to 11). I think eventually with some experience you will have a gut feeling for how 'well' your run is doing compared to similar situations after 2/3 islands, and in that case the odds play is to go to another island if you're behind the curve, ESPECIALLY if your grid is low.

If you're ahead it probably doesn't matter that much on Easy/Normal in terms of pure win%, but on Hard it's probably nice to cash in any reasonably likely win, since I'm guessing they tuned it so that on Hard it's less likely that doing well will help you accumulate more loot/cores to an extent that significantly outweighs the fact that things get harder the more you do.
