Different topic: Anyone in here experienced with buying a time-share property? This would be a 4 week/yr ownership of a specific house, not a big resort type thing. I'm in the honeymoon phase of it seeming like a great idea so I'm looking for a reality smack.
I literally don't know a single person literally that has not eventually regretted a time share "purchase."

Be especially wary of fees for "repairs and maintenance" on the contract - here is a local story where it was forecast to be $500/year and it's now many, many, MANY $thousands$. The timeshare "owners" went to court repeatedly and lost.

I quite liked Virginia and found the people friendly. I did find the recreated native american camp at Jamestown was staffed pretty much exclusively 6' tall blonde Caucasian people that looked like they were from Sweden or maybe the Netherlands dressed in buckskin. The authenticity was a little low on that one.

90%+ of :canada: registered JDMs I've seen are total poo poo heaps. The ones owned by people that care and properly maintain them go for a significant premium. The others are owned by teens/20 somethings that can't afford their insurance, let alone proper maintenance... especially if the parts need to be imported.

Being a relative newb to watches beyond battery powered quartz movement, I could use some input...

My better half bought me a Victorinox Automatic as an engagement present (we've been married 6 years now) which I really love, but it's been picking up more and more time (in the realm of 5+minutes a week). I sent it in to get serviced, and they come back with $375 to rebuild. With the cost of shipping (another $35), that puts me just $100 shy of buying a brand new version of the same watch. Digging around, it looks like they expect this every 4-6 years anyways. I like it enough to pay it this time..but do it again in another 5 years? Ouch. Is this common amongst automatics?

Ultimately, I need to decide to either decline the work and keep the watch as is and constantly adjusting it, or shelling out and getting it fixed now, and re-evaluate later on down the line. I can afford it which is nice, but that's still a lot of $$$ to fix something that I wouldn't expect to be a problem after a few comparatively short years... What would you do, goons? Sentimental value is pushing me towards the latter right now but I'm open to outside perspective.. FWIW, the better half doesn't care so much and just wants me to be happy. Have I mentioned she's awesome?
I have a atomic radio synch citizen and I absolutely  it. It's not overly garish and does an atomic synch everyday. Basically keeps perfect time.

A relative of mine inherited a beautiful $22K Rolex, and she can't stand wearing it because it can't keep time. After several services/checks at the Rolex dealer, she basically got a  that it's within spec to drift 7 minutes every few weeks.

So now it languishes in a sock drawer and she wears a $85 Citizen.

As a middle aged guy, Mrs and I are finally doing our official wills up this week. When my sister in law passed away intestate a couple years back, made me realize I never want to do that to anyone.

How many of you have wills, personal directives and power of attorney poo poo ready to go.....just in case?

Keep in mind when you kick it, or are incapacitated, there is a lot more to affairs that need to be taken care of than just assets. My sister in law had meager assets, but gently caress me what a pain in the rear end to deal with poo poo.

Care to elaborate? I've never had to deal with an estate so I honestly don't know.
Sure, to be clear I'm not a lawyer but I do have a bit of experience navigating this. I assume most western countries are similar.

Just to be clear - intestate=dying with no legal will. This is just a quick skim of what I can think of off the top of my head.

When you die, everyone pretty much thinks of the assets and who gets what. That's the easy part.

What if you are alive but incapacitated, what are your wishes/personal directives? Heroic measures? DNR? If you kick it, what do you want done with your body? Traditional North American burial? Cremation? Eco friendly? Donate it for science? Do you care? Who is deciding this? Do you have enough cash in your estate to pay for your wishes? If not, then what? The funeral home isn't going to want to keep your body on ice until assets are liquidated and cash is available.

If you are married or common law, you're *probably* going to want to leave everything to your spouse (and vice versa) and let them be executor/power of attorney, but not necessarily.

Especially if you are single, someone has to take control and go through your poo poo, as in your actual, physical stuff in addition to bank accounts. If you get hit by a bus, do you really want your mom or dad to go through your personal effects (which is *everything* - including your collection of 70s hair porn in the back of your closet) Best friend? Do they even live in the same city as you? The person you think you want to do this - do they actually have the time to do this? Do you really want your kid sister that has 3 toddlers and an abusive alcoholic husband have to deal with this? Your senior citizen parents? What do you want done with the personal effects that are almost worthless? Are they personally cleaning out your house/apartment? What about your social media accounts? Does anyone have immediate access to your bank accounts to keep your estate running while this gets figured out? Do they know where to find the info they'll need? Do you have any insurance? Life or otherwise? If they can't get easy access to your accounts, do they have the financial ability to take time off work and look after everything as this gets sorted out? If something comes up that needs to get paid (like aforementioned funeral) - do they have the resources to do so?

Also, and this is the stuff that people forget, your estate is still going to be in existence for a while to wrap everything up. Just because you are dead doesn't mean Visa or other creditors don't get their money. Your taxes (yes, income taxes with the added bonus of estate taxes) still need to be done. Who is doing that? If you have a house and house insurance, who is paying the premiums? Who is watching the house? Who is paying the taxes? Do you have a mortgage? Who's dealing with them? Does the insurance company need someone to monitor the house to retain coverage? Who is dealing with your utilities? Your estate needs to go through probate and the courts. Who is driving that bus? The same guy that you want to get all your stuff? Do they know that? Does this person get paid for dealing with all this? Lots of paperwork. It's a big responsibility. Everything needs to be documented. If you don't have a will, this is far more painful and slow than it need be as everything needs to be approved by the courts (as in literally, going to the courts) and there is a good chance the person trying to deal with all your poo poo has never had to do it before. My sister-in-laws took more than a year and we had the help of the bank she worked for, which thankfully did estate planning (although she didn't get her poo poo together on her own and left it to her family to deal with it). A co-workers sister passed away intestate almost 2 years ago, and my he is STILL loving around with her estate getting poo poo straightened out, although there is finally some light at the end of the tunnel for that one.... and that is with the help of a lawyer.

Thoughts on if this would be stupid to consider:

I have a brand new car, only has 1500 miles on it. Would it be idiotic to rent a car for $175 or a SUV for $250 for a week to keep from putting 1500 more miles on it next week on vacation?

Also the rental would have full coverage with no out of pocket from my credit card protection. Thoughts? I am not a rich man but would this cost seem to be a worthy expense?
That...sounds odd. I've never thought of that. You have already bought the car, paid for insurance, tags, etc so that's sitting in your driveway with value being lost every single day either way.

You're going to have to pay for fuel on a rental so lets call that a wash (assuming they are similar).

I guess the simple way of looking at it is your rental costs higher or lower than 1500 miles of wear and tear on your new car. My total guess is $175 is more than what 1500 miles of wear and tear would do to your car, so my vote would be likely not.
