If he has a fatal disease you can give him the OTT cartoon villian plot as-is; it's more believable someone would do that poo poo for a legacy when it's his only play, rather than just .... er, because.

You can stack more hexagonal shapes in a circle around a cylinder, whilst not being as awkward as a cylinder itself.
It's not a bad compromise between volume and cumbersomeness.
